The original extended moment at the end of the Christmas special

The original extended moment at the end of the Christmas special

Spoilers for Doctor Who: Twice Upon A Time!

The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine not only features a fresh interview with the new Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker. But it also has Twice Upon A Time director Rachel Talalay chatting about the Christmas special, and a spoiler-y moment that originally was just a little different.

It’s the bit at the end of the episode where Jenna Coleman’s Clara returns to bid farewell to Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. Coleman’s footage was actually shot in the Top Gear offices in London, the article reveals, as the production worked around Coleman’s extensive commitments to filming ITV’s Victoria.

“We couldn’t get Jenna to our set. We couldn’t have the three companions there together. But she does make a magical appearance on the battlefield, which we had to shoot separately a few days after the rest of the episode had wrapped”, Talalay confirmed. Capaldi and Coleman didn’t record the scene together, as it happened. “But I think we pulled it off”, Talalay said.

The recording of Coleman’s moment was outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat’s final piece of physical production that he oversaw, after the main shoot was complete. And he admitted that Clara’s moment in the episode was originally a lot longer, but “I rewrote, and rewrote, and rewrote for everything we could do with Jenna’s schedule”.

Originally, Clara was set to appear in the scene where Bill and Nardole big farewell to the Doctor, with the Doctor hinting that he’s about to pick his favourite (although none of them can work out who he picked). But that was, as you more than likely guessed, changed for what we got. Which was hardly shabby!

The full article can be found in the new Doctor Who Magazine, that’s on sale now.

Peter Wyngarde as Timanov in Planet of Fire (1984)

Actor Peter Wyngarde, the star of Doctor Who Planet of Fire has died aged 90.

His agent and manager confirmed that he had passed away in a London hospital. He described the Doctor Who actor as “the most exceptional person I met in my life and a great mentor and teacher.”

After beginning his career on stage in 1947, he went on to act alongside Richard Burton in Alexander the Great. But it was taking the lead role in Department S and its subsequent spin-off Jason King that made him a household name. It was a character that was said to be the inspiration behind the comedy character Austin Powers.

Wyngarde’s agent, Thomas Bowington, said that the actor was “one of the most unique, original and creative actors that I have ever seen.

“As a man, there were few things in life he didn’t know,” said Bowington. “I sometimes nicknamed him the King because he simply knew everything.

“He was a mentor on everything you can think of, from sports cars to how to make a good cup of tea and how to do a tie and shirt,” he added. “He died at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and even then he was saying that you shouldn’t button the upper button on a shirt.”

Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen

By Douglas Adams and James Goss

The Doctor promised Romana the end of the universe, so she’s less than impressed when what she gets is a cricket match. But then the award ceremony is interrupted by eleven figures in white uniforms and peaked skull helmets, wielding bat-shaped weapons that fire lethal bolts of light into the screaming crowd. The Krikkitmen are back.

Millions of years ago, the people of Krikkit learned they were not alone in the universe, and promptly launched a xenophobic crusade to wipe out all other life-forms. After a long and bloody conflict, the Time Lords imprisoned Krikkit within an envelope of Slow Time, a prison that could only be opened with the Wicket Gate key, a device that resembles – to human eyes, at least – an oversized set of cricket stumps…

From Earth to Gallifrey, from Bethselamin to Devalin, from Krikkit to Mareeve II to the far edge of infinity, the Doctor and Romana are tugged into a pan-galactic conga with fate as they rush to stop the Krikkitmen gaining all five pieces of the key. If they fail, the entire cosmos faces a fiery retribution that will leave nothing but ashes…

This is an unabridged reading of the brand new novel featuring the Fourth Doctor by Dan Starkey, best known for playing Sontaran Strax.

Duration: 9 hours 40 mins (approx).

The Ambassadors of Death

By Terrance Dicks

Seven months after it left Mars there has still been no radio communication with the Probe Seven spacecraft, or the astronauts inside it. Back on Earth concern is mounting, and eventually a recovery capsule is sent up to rescue the astronauts. But when the capsule returns to Earth it is found to be empty. As the Doctor and Liz investigate, they discover that the interior of the capsule is highly radioactive: if anyone was inside, they would now surely be dead.

Have the astronauts returned to Earth? And if not, who are the sinister space-suited figures who stalk the countryside, and whose very touch means instant death?

This is an unabridged reading of the novelisation of the Third Doctor television adventure by Geoffrey Beevers, best known for playing The Master in the 1981 serial, The Keeper of Traken.

Duration: 4 hours (approx).

Steven Moffat reveals his plans for Doctor Who had David Tennant stayed

Steven Moffat reveals his plans for Doctor Who had David Tennant stayed

moffat dalek tennant

Doctor Who retirement seems to suit Steven Moffat. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him as relaxed as he is in this interview with the Doctor Who Fan Show, and with it comes the old wry Moffat wit – plus some amazing tidbits from his time in charge.

For instance, on the failed attempt to replace the ‘old’ copper coloured Daleks with larger multi-coloured models, he’s brutally honest about the failings.

“It was a salutary lesson,” he says. “The fault lies entirely with me, not the brilliant team who made the new Daleks. They were beautiful in many respects. But it was my mistake, and a completely unnecessary one… Now if you’ve seen those actual props, they’re gorgeous. If you see them on stage or in real life. Where they don’t look good is on television, the only place it matters that they look good!”

“It was a fascinating lesson I never forgot. We made the Daleks huge. Why? We make the Daleks huge and you just move the camera further away, and you make the Doctor smaller.”

He goes on to explain that the fault was in focussing on the wrong things in his first year as showrunner.

“We put so much thought and effort into our first block, episodes that I think stands up to this day – I took my eye off the ball of my block two episodes. I shouldn’t have been on that set, I shouldn’t have been giving endless notes on rushes that were unnecessary. I should have moved my attention to block two, taken a look at those Daleks’ camera tests. Most of the things I’m unsure about are in that block two, when most of my attention was on beginning. Beginning is easy, it’s keeping going that’s hard.”

Of course, that beginning might have been very different, if David Tennant had decided to stay on.

“David was going through the now-to-me very familiar angst about leaving, [but] it would definitely have been his last one.”

To that end, the plot would have been close to what turned into Matt Smith’s debut, with some significant differences.

“My version of that series would have been the David Tennant Doctor crashing into the back garden about to regenerate, and little Amelia would help him back to the Tardis and fly off.

“And then she’d meet him later, but he’d have no memory of that, because we’d come to realise that was the Doctor from the future and we’d make our way through the series to the point where the Doctor gets back to that.”

It’s an interesting ‘what-if’ for fans to ponder, and Moffat was keen to push back on the idea that every new showrunner must change everything just for the sake of it.

“Frankly if David and Catherine [Tate] had wanted to continue, I wouldn’t have [changed everything], it would have been the same design for the Tardis [etc]. Because there’s no way that version of the show was worn out.”

The rest of the interview, which covers everything from social media to the 50thanniversary, is well worth a listen.

Turns out the French version of Bake Off uses music from Doctor Who

Turns out the French version of Bake Off uses music from Doctor Who

BBC screengrab, TL

We know the Doctor is partial to a Jammie Dodger, but across the Channel, the Time Lord is helping create even more impressive pastry-feats. It turns out that in France, Le Meilleur Pâtissier (“The Best Baker” en Anglais) opens with the most epic music in the Whoniverse.

Specifically, the baking competition greets viewers with I Am the Doctor, a tune we first heard in Matt Smith’s debut outing as the Time Lord in series 5’s The Eleventh Hour. Composed by Murray Gold, it’s the blockbuster song that plays during The Doc’s most epic turns, the magnificent melody we hear when the Time Lord reveals the day isn’t lost and the universe will be saved from destruction.

And now it’s used to recap Dessert Week.

https://youtu.be/EGh_5Z7nynk

We can’t say it’s a bad choice of music – it’s certainly blood-pumping and seems to fit the footage, as several Reddit users noted. But it’s a tune that now makes us really really want to see Gallifrey’s finest embark on a Bake Off adventure.

In the spirit of the new multi-companion Tardis, perhaps Paul, Prue, Noel and Sandi could join The Doctor in the noblest mission of all: going back in time to correct the crumbling Dalek biscuit tower that got contestant Rob Smart exterminated from the competition in 2013.

We’re sure the Time Lord High Council won’t mind too much.

Production on Doctor Who series 11 has been based in Cape Town, South Africa since the start of the year, with block two of episodes now filming. Mark Tonderai is directing this block, and reports of location work have been popping up on Twitter over the past week or so.

Furthermore, the Girly Letters account has now uncovered a bunch of images from the Cape Town shoot of Doctor Who. Without further ado…

Filming continues on the new series, although we suspect its time in South Africa is edging to an end…

UPDATE: Whilst Mark Tonderai hasn’t been officially announced as the director of Doctor Who series 11’s second block of episodes, he clearly is. The shoot has been in and around the Cape Town area of South Africa this past week or two, and Tonderai’s Instagram account has now revealed that it’s headed to the desert for filming…

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd-3puAhvc0/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_legacy

Tonderai is directing at least two episodes of the new series.

Previously…

Doctor Who series 11, headlined by Jodie Whittaker of course, is currently filming an episode in South Africa as part of the second block of episodes for the new series. And thanks to the sleuthing work of the excellent Ruther2 on Twitter, it looks as if we know who’s directing that block.

Mark Tonderai, director of films such as Hush and House At The End Of The Street, is reckoned to be directing the second block of episodes. The discovery was made thanks, in time honoured fashion, to an actor’s agent listing. In this case, Gareth Marks, who’s playing ‘The Police Officer’ in the new series…

Tonderai, whilst not officially announced, has fine form in television too, with shows such as Gotham, Lucifer and The Five to his name.

Filming continues on the new series.

UPDATE: Another top spot from @Ruther2 – block two of Doctor Who series 11 features episodes 2 and 3 of the new series. The first block covered episodes 1 and 7.

Bella Emberg RIP

Bella Emberg RIP

Tributes have been paid to the “huge comedy talent” Bella Emberg, who has died, aged 80.

Bella played two uncredited parts during the Third Doctor’s era. She appeared as a nurse in Doctor Who and the Silurians and as a kitchen maid in The Time Warrior.

In the revived series, she played Mrs Croot in Love & Monsters. She filmed a second appearance as Mrs Croot for The Runaway Bride, but this scene ended up on the cutting room floor.

Bella Emberg is best known for playing comedic parts, most notably as a foil to Benny Hill and later Russ Abbot during various of both of these comedians’ television programmes.

She was “a woman of immense warmth and generosity”, Abbot said.

Emberg also appeared on The Benny Hill Show, Z Cars and Doctor Who in a television career spanning six decades.

“She was not only a great sport but a huge comedy talent. I count myself very lucky to have worked alongside her,” Abbot added.

“She really was a one-off.”

In an interview with the Daily Mirror last year, Emberg insisted the Blunder Woman character had been a blessing, not a curse, despite meaning that when the show finished in 1996 she could not get work.

“I went for jobs and they’d say: ‘We’d love to hire you but you’re too well known with Russ,'” she told the paper.

“Once every few weeks I go and look at that Blunder Woman costume – still hanging up at home – and I feel nothing but gratitude.”

Actor Les Dennis paid tribute to his “funny, lovely friend”, while comedian Bobby Davro called her “a true comedy talent”.

Friend and pianist Bobby Crush described her as a “truly gentle soul”.

The “funniest fairy”, comedy actor Paul Chuckle added, while her agent said she would be “greatly missed”.

Emberg had just finished filming a new Sky One comedy, In the Long Run, created by Idris Elba and due to be released later this year.

Chris Chibnall reveals Steven Moffat’s warning when he was first offered the Doctor Who job

It’s fair to say that this autumn’s series of Doctor Who is one of the most eagerly-anticipated in years, with fans desperate to learn everything they can about new Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and her first adventures in the Tardis.

However, it turns out that finding out things about the new series might be especially difficult in 2018 – because new showrunner Chris Chibnall has revealed he’s working hard to keep Doctor Who production even more under wraps now that he’s taken over.

“The Thirteenth Doctor is here, and we can tell you everything,” Chibnall wrote in Doctor Who Magazine’s regular Production Notes column, previously penned by showrunner predecessors Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies. “Although, of course, we’d rather not – for now.

“We’d rather keep things for when we can show you, rather than tell you. So if we don’t announce much, or give interviews for a while, it’s because we’re currently focusing all our attention on making the show, not talking about it.”

Still, Chibnall didn’t hold all his cards to his chest, revealing exactly what Steven Moffat said to get him to take over the top job as well as his own trepidation and excitement at working on the new series.

“Let me think of something I can tell you,” Chibnall said. “How about the words Steven Moffat used, when he broached the question of whether I’d want to take over the greatest show on television?

“He said: ‘I’m sorry, but I’m about to derail your life.’ As opening gambits go, it’s a good one. And. As it turns out, true.

“Now, you’re probably either excited or worried about the future – maybe both,” he went on.

“‘If it’s any consolation, that combination of excitement and concern is also the natural state of making the show: excited about what you’re planning, concerned how you’ll achieve it.”

Chibnall finished by paying tribute to Doctor Who’s legacy of change, casting Whittaker’s status as the first female incarnation of the Doctor just one more step in that grand legacy.

“What’s evident is Doctor Who’s extraordinary ability to embrace change while remaining exactly the same show that people love,” he said.

“Doctor Who wrote change into its format from the start, going from location to location and story to story. Then it wrote change into the DNA of its lead character!

“It’s always looking forward, asking ‘What’s next?’ That’s the job, for me, for the writers, for the production team, for Jodie and all our new cast.

“That’s our challenge, and we’re loving it. It is so much fun,” he concluded.

We can hardly wait to see that fun explode on screen – even if we have to hold off a little longer than usual before we find out what’s happening.

ALIENS AMONG US PART 3

Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper have restarted Torchwood. But it’s in a very different Cardiff. Something terrible’s happened to the city. With every day getting darker, will Torchwood need to adopt a whole new approach?

Poker Face by Tim Foley
Torchwood are in trouble. Terrorist attacks are rocking the city. Control of the police has been ceded to Cardiff’s alien masters. And it looks like it’s all been arranged by Captain Jack Harkness. Worse, there’s a dead woman in the cells who says that Torchwood will be hers by dawn.

Tagged by Joseph Lidster
“I know what you’ve done. I know what you’ll do.” The phrase starts appearing everywhere around Cardiff. On posters. On the internet. It’s just a prank, isn’t it? Only a wave of vigilante crime spreads through the city. People are taking revenge. Suddenly everyone knows what you’ve done. And they know what you’ll do.

Escape Room by Helen Goldwyn
Gwen Cooper, Rhys Williams, and the Colchester-Prices go to try out an escape room. They’ve heard a lot about them. Especially this one. People keep going into the game and not coming out. But Torchwood will be fine. After all – partners can trust each other. Can’t they?

Herald of the Dawn by James Goss
It all starts normally enough. A car park full of ramblers is incinerated by a thunderbolt. But the next day it’s clear there’s something very wrong. Something’s changed. Something’s coming. It’s the end of the world. And that’s what Torchwood are best at.

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART BRAND NEW SHORT ANTHOLOGY ANNOUNCED

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART BRAND NEW SHORT ANTHOLOGY ANNOUNCED

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce a new collection of short stories. Lethbridge-Stewart: Lineage is a series of tales about the Lethbridge-Stewart family from the early 1600s right up to the present day (including three brand new adventures featuring the Brig himself).

Lethbridge-Stewart: Lineage features the writing talents of Andrew Allen, Harry Draper, Gareth Madgwick, Wink Taylor, Chris Lynch, David A McIntee and Andy Frankham-Allen, with stories taking place in the 1600s, 1800s, 1940s, 1970s, and 2010s exploring the ancestors and descendants of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart.

Head of Publishing, Shaun Russell says: “We’ve been pondering doing a collection like this for some time, but it never seemed to be the right time. But with the impending fiftieth anniversary of the first appearance of the Brig in Doctor Who, combined with the recent appearance of the Brigadier’s grandfather in Twice Upon a Time, and the positive response that garnered, it seemed that the time was, finally, now.”

Editor Andy Frankham-Allen says: “I love exploring the Brigadier’s lineage, be it his immediate family in the shape of his mother and father, or his descendants, in the shape of his son and grandchildren. But I’ve always wanted to go deeper, to look at some other Lethbridge-Stewarts, or indeed Stewarts and Lethbridges, to find out what kind of impact they had on the world. Sometimes that impact can be huge, and sometimes it can be the smallest thing that has the biggest repercussions. With this collection, we get to explore some of the lesser known ancestors, and introduce some never even mentioned before. And, of course, we get to visit the rising star that is Lucy Wilson, the Brigadier’s adventuring granddaughter!”

Blurb:

The Lethbridge-Stewart name carries with it stories of integrity, honour and courage. But was it always so?

From its earliest origins with the Clan Stewart in Scotland, and the Lethbridges in Devon, England, the name has a storied past. Historical figures, history makers, miitary heroes…

Lethbridge-Stewart: Lineage presents six brand-new tales from some of the most popular authors previously published in The HAVOC Files collection, as well as one from the creative mind of writer and film maker Chris Lynch.

Based on characters created and inspired by Mervyn Haisman & Henry Lincoln

Lethbridge-Stewart: Lineage will be available as a hardback for a strictly limited time. The most recent short story collection, The HAVOC Files 4, sold out very quickly, so please be sure to order your copy of this limited edition hardback collection immediately.

Lethbridge-Stewart: Lineage is available for pre-order now, for £12.99 (+ p&p). It is NOT part of any bundle offer.
