The Doctor Who Experience Closing Day SOLD OUT!

The Doctor Who Experience Closing Day SOLD OUT!

59928

After five years enchanting Doctor Who fans, The Doctor Who Experience is set to close this weekend, with the collection of Whoniverse props, sets and costumes facing an uncertain future as the BBC sci-fi series begins a new era.

Here’s everything you need to know about the final days of the exhibition.

When is the Doctor Who Experience closing?

The Experience will officially close on Saturday 9th September, though tickets are all sold out for the last day.

Why is the Doctor Who Experience closing?

The five-year sub-lease on the building (leased from Cardiff Council) has come to an end, with the land now reverting to the council.

“The Doctor Who Experience has enjoyed a fantastic five-year run in Cardiff Bay but, sadly, our five-year sub-lease from the City of Cardiff Council will come to an end in Summer 2017,” BBC Worldwide said in a statement last November.

Will the exhibition open anywhere else?

Rumours have circled for a while that a new version of the Doctor Who Experience could be opened in Manchester, though the BBC has yet to announce any such plans officially.

Such an idea isn’t completely out of the question – a different Doctor Who Experience previously existed in London before the move down to Cardiff – but given the silence around the project, any such move can only be in the very early stages of planning, if the rumours are true at all.

What will happen to the props and costumes?

When the closure of the exhibition was announced, BBC Worldwide suggested that there could be a future for the valuable Doctor Who props, sets and costumes on display, saying that while they were “not sure” what was coming they were “exploring ways in which we can use the artefacts in possible new events.”

They added: “BBC Worldwide is always looking at new and exciting ways to increase fans’ enjoyment of Doctor Who.”

However, as of yet there’s no word on what these events may be, with the BBC remaining tight-lipped about whether the props could be toured around the country or donated to other museums (assuming rumours of a new Doctor Who Experience elsewhere are false).

If no such role is found for them, RadioTimes.com understands that the props would be returned to BBC storage or their private owners, waiting for use at future events.

Steven Moffat drops hints about Jodie Whittaker’s first Doctor Who scenes: “She’s given us the Doctor we’ve always known”

Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who

While we’re still just under four months away from seeing Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, a select few have now seen her Time Lord in action after she filmed the regeneration scene a few weeks ago.

Based on the reaction of outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat (who will be replaced by Chris Chibnall this December) we have plenty to look forward to, with the screenwriter dropping hints about what to expect in a short commemoration video message given to digital artist and colourist Stuart Humphryes (who works restoring classic Doctor Who episodes among his other work).

“Doctor Who has an amazing future, and I’ve seen part of it,” Moffat said on Humphryes’ YouTube channel Babelcolour.

“I’ve seen Jodie’s first scene as the Doctor, and trust me we are in for a thrill ride. She is already brilliant.

“In such a tiny moment, she’s given us the Doctor we’ve always known, but in, to say the least, a new way. We are in for a very exciting run.”

However, Moffat was also keen to stress that we had plenty to enjoy BEFORE then too, with Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi’s final episode Twice Upon a Time currently in postproduction.

“Doctor Who has a very exciting present, because we’re still working on the CHRISTMAS present that is… that’s a very bad joke isn’t it? That is the Christmas special, where David Bradley returns as the First Doctor,” he said.

“He exquisitely recreates William Hartnell’s wonderful performance from all those years ago. A recreation of such beauty and precision that it would be worthy of Babelcolour itself.

“And of course you’ve got Peter Capaldi in his very last go as the Doctor. He’s going to break your heart! Your heart is going to be in pieces by the end of this.

“Only Jodie Whittaker will be able to cheer you up again,” he concluded.

Sounds like a very sad and very happy 25th December awaits us.

Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who

…If you fit the job description..

Do you want a chance to shape the future of Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor Who? The BBC is looking for a script editor to join the sci-fi show for the next series as the Thirteenth Doctor begins her adventure.

The ad calls for applicants with “previous experience of script editing a large scale drama series”, which probably rules most of us out. But still: dream job.

“An excellent understanding of all aspects of screenwriting, including premise, story, structure and character and an ability to apply this knowledge to working situations with writers, as well as experience of working with writers under pressure are essential for this role,” the job listing continues.
