Is Doctor Who recreating more classic scenes for the Christmas special?

This December’s Doctor Who Christmas special is set to be momentous for a number of reasons, with Twice Upon a Time serving simultaneously as Peter Capaldi’s final adventure as the Doctor, Steven Moffat’s final writing credit and Jodie Whittaker’s first appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor.

But of course the episode will also have the distinction of hosting the return of the very first incarnation of the Doctor, originally played by William Hartnell in the first 1960s episodes of the show and now taken over by David Bradley (after the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones star previously played Hartnell in 2013 making-of drama An Adventure in Space and Time).

And it’s the original Doctor’s inclusion that raises some of the most interesting possibilities about the upcoming episode. Since Bradley’s involvement was announced it’s been revealed that at least some of the action is taking place during Hartnell’s final episode The Tenth Planet, with the episode trailer depicting sets and characters from the episode.

Even more interestingly, the opening scene of the Twice Upon a Time trailer morphs between archive footage of Hartnell and new colourised footage of Bradley, leading many fans to wonder whether the finished episode will feature more recreations of the classic (and partially lost) episode – speculation only fanned by episode director Rachel Talalay in a recent interview.

“I feel like I’m an expert in the Tenth Planet! I think I’ve watched Tenth Planet more than anybody,” Talalay told the This Week in Time Travel podcast earlier this month when asked about her expertise classic-era Cybermen for the series 10 finale.

And then, she added an enticing postscript.

“Sections of it I’ve watched over and over again for reasons that will become clearer over Christmas,” she said.

“And also different reconstructions and the animated reconstructions. So yeah – I’ve watched sections of it a LOT.”

So could this suggest Talalay has been poring over these classic scenes so she can accurately recreate them just like Hartnell’s speech from the trailer? Will we see more morphs from the original episode to brand-new footage, or was that technique only intended for a one-off promotional shot? And generally speaking, will we spend this Christmas enjoying sections of the First Doctor’s final hours lovingly reimagined on screen, or watching a story that largely ignores the earlier one altogether?

Frustratingly as ever, we can’t know for sure until nearer the time. But we reckon old series fans like Moffat and Capaldi would be loth to miss out on the chance to pay tribute to a truly classic episode of Doctor Who – and even if they did go in a different direction, there are doubtlessly legions of fans who could stitch together the two stories for fleeting online acclaim.

One way or another, we’ll almost definitely see these two separate estranged figures brought together – and in the end, isn’t that what Christmas is all about?

John Barrowman has found a special way to honour Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen

John Barrowman has found a special way to honour Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen

Elisabeth Sladen – the actress best known for her portrayal of Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures – is getting a special tribute in the Whoniverse.

It’s thanks to John Barrowman and sister Carole, who have created a new comic-book character in Sladen’s honour. Simply called Sladen, the character will be introduced in Torchwood: The Culling #1 after she’s discovered in a pod buried in the Arctic.

Why was she there? How will the Torchwood team react to her arrival? And Will K9 have a cameo? We’re not quite sure – details are being kept a mystery.

Revealing the new character in a Facebook post, John and Carole – who write the comic book series – said: “We are very excited to bring this new character Sladen to the world of Torchwood. You all know both Carole and I were great fans of the wonderful Elisabeth Sladen who played Sarah Jane Smith and what a better way to pay homage to her and create a character with her last name.

“Elisabeth Sladen/ Sarah Jane Smith was the mother of our ship on Doctor Who and now Sladen lives in Torchwood.”

They also hinted: “Now Captain Jack must battle his worst nightmare… or greatest daydream!”

Elisabeth Sladen died at the age of 63 from pancreatic cancer in 2011. However, her Who role is still fondly remembered, with The Sarah Jane Adventures celebrating its 10-year anniversary last week.

This Dalek from Doctor Who is 3D printed and motorised

This Dalek from Doctor Who is 3D printed and motorised

While you’ve been able to 3D print yourself a Doctor Who Dalek for quite some time now, this motorised version by maker Matthew Palulis is one of the best.

This is thanks to the ability of this print to drive around on your floor. Hidden inside of the print, the Dalek is sitting on top of the chassis of a regular toy RC car, and it can be driven around as such.

After a weekend of printing on two separate 3D printers, the completed model is 14.5″ (36.83 centimetres) tall and finished in a pleasing purple paint job.

You can see it driving around in the video below, already terrorising other beings in an annoyed parrot.

This isn’t even the finished version of the project. He’s prepping it for Santa Fe Comic Con where it will also light up and speak the signature “EXTERMINATE” catchphrase.

To add those functions he’s going to use a simple LED controller kit and a recordable gift card hooked up to a PC speaker.

We can definitely see someone expanding on this project with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi for more functionality, such as control over a phone or tablet.

If you can’t wait until late in October to see the project finished, you could start work on your own by downloading the files off of MyMiniFactory. While you’re there, make sure you take a look at the rest of Palulis’ profile for more Doctor Who prints.

Spliced together from a seemingly lost archive of over 300 tape reels.

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop — the sound artists behind famous early electronic TV soundtracks like Doctor Who and Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy — have unveiled an unreleased highlight from their most famous member, the late Delia Derbyshire.

Titled ‘Future Ghosts’, the piece was made of various elements from Derbyshire’s seemingly lost tape archive. The collection, containing over 300 tape reels, was found in the artist’s attic after her death and used to construct the new piece.

You can hear ‘Future Ghosts’ in its entirety in the trailer for The Radiophonic Workshop At 60 performance and panel discussion which will be held October 13 at the British Library.

Earlier this summer Reform Radio featured unreleased music from Derbyshire in a special episode dedicated to her. Earlier this year the Radiophonic Workshop released their first album in 32 years.

Bessie brings Doctor Who to Beaulieu

Bessie brings Doctor Who to Beaulieu

AN ICONIC car from the tales of the Time Lords is now on show at the National Motor Museum in the New Forest.

Doctor Who’s much-loved car Bessie, which was a favourite with millions of viewers for its futuristic features in the Seventies, has been put on show in “On Screen Cars” at the Beaulieu museum.

The Earth-based transport for Jon Pertwee’s third Doctor was a bright yellow vintage car replica which starred in many episodes of the cult sci-fi show across two decades.

The car first appeared in the Doctor Who and the Silurians episode in 1970 when the Doctor was stranded on planet Earth and exiled by the Time Lords without the use of his Tardis.

After a string of appearances in the show, Bessie’s last hurrah on the small screen came in 1993 with the charity special episode Dimensions in Time.

Bessie may look like a vintage car, but in reality is a 1954 Ford Popular 103E, fitted with a fibreglass tourer body made by Siva Engineering of Dorset.

Bessie joins the prestigious line-up of motoring stars in “On Screen Cars” at Beaulieu alongside the likes of Del Boy’s Reliant Regal Supervan and Mr Bean’s green Mini.

Steven Moffat: Missy was the turning point in casting a female Doctor

Steven Moffat: Missy was the turning point in casting a female Doctor

The casting of Jodie Whittaker as the new star of Doctor Who this summer took many fans by surprise, with her status as the first female Doctor kept under wraps for months before being unveiled during the Wimbledon tennis final.

However, some fans have since pointed out that there were some hints towards the Time Lord’s gender change in the most recent series of the BBC sci-fi drama, with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor hoping the future could be “all girl” in series finale the Doctor Falls and previously explaining his species ability to change gender to companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) in World Enough and Time.

“We’re the most civilised civilisation in the universe,” he said. “We’re billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.”

And of course, even before that we had the fact that the Doctor’s longtime nemesis the Master (previously played by Roger Delgado, Antony Ainley, Eric Roberts and John Simm) had regenerated into a woman herself in 2014, Michelle Gomez’s Missy – a choice that departing head writer Steven Moffat now says was the catalyst for Whittaker’s casting.

“I mean I suppose we’ve been heading in this direction for a while with the Master becoming a woman,” Moffat told The Showbiz Lion at the Edinburgh TV festival.

“I always thought the moment the Master became a woman, the Doctor would NEVER allow that to stand without having a go at the same.”

So clearly, a female Doctor was written in the stars for years – and Moffat seems pretty pleased that it’s finally happened.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful. I think it’s thrilling,” he said.

“But never mind the fact everyone’s talking about how it’s a woman – it’s Jodie Whittaker! That’s the great thing. Jodie Whittaker, one of the best actors of her generation, is playing the doctor.

He concluded: “I’ve already seen her first little tiny bit and it’s brilliant.”

Sounds like a truly masterful enterprise – in more ways than one.

Russell T Davies says female Doctor Who ‘backlash’ is “outrageous”

Russell T Davies says female Doctor Who ‘backlash’ is “outrageous”

Russell T Davies has called the apparent backlash over a female Doctor Who “outrageous”.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Jodie Whittaker would replace Peter Capaldi to become the 13th and first ever female Doctor during this year’s Christmas special.

Following the announcement, there was a lot of praise for the decision, with a number of famous faces coming out in support of the refreshing and progressive change.

The decision did prompt some criticism, however, from certain sections of the fanbase, but according to former showrunner Russell T Davies, the naysayers were few and far between.

Russell T Davies.

Elsewhere in the interview, Davies was asked how he felt about some of his narrative choices being retroactively changed by Steven Moffat during his time as showrunner, specifically relating to Gallifrey’s salvation in ‘The Day of the Doctor’.

“When you leave Doctor Who, you have to take a deep breath and think it’s all up for grabs now, it’s all there to be rewritten,” he mused.

“It was interesting. I love that episode. It wasn’t so much the Time Lords disappearing, it was all the Daleks shooting themselves.

“It was like, couldn’t any of them [have] missed?”

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SERIES FIVE ANNOUNCED

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SERIES FIVE ANNOUNCED

Candy Jar Books is pleased to announce the latest titles in its Lethbridge-Stewart range of novels are now available for pre-order!

Series five opens with The New Unusual by first-time novelist, Adrian Sherlock, who wrote the short story, The Playing Dead, in 2016.

It is followed by A Very Private Haunting by Sharon Bidwell, who is no stranger to wrting novels, with quite a CV behind her, including the Lethbridge-Stewart short story, The Wishing Bazaar in 2016.

The series is wrapped off with The Man from Yesterday, by popular novelist Nick Walters, who returns with his much-anticipated second novel in the Lethbridge-Stewart series, following 2015’s Mutually Assured Domination.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen says: “It’s quite an exciting series, with three very distinctively different stories. Each explores very different aspects of the Lethbridge-Stewart universe. A New-Age thriller taking the team to Australia, a ghost story set in and around a haunted manor, and an all-out adventure which pits very branches of Lethbridge-Stewart’s family against each other.”

The New Unusual sees our heroes being drawn to Australia after investigating strange goings-on at dream-ins, mysterious new age gatherings in which people explore their deepest desires through eggs of alien origin. This book features the return of Lethbridge-Stewart’s nephew, Owain.

A Very Private Haunting sees Arthur Penrose finally take ownership of a Scottish manor house that’s been in his family for generations. There are many secrets in the house, but what connects them to the mysterious shadow creatrues that Lethbridge-Stewart and his men are investigating?

The Man from Yesterday sees Lethbridge-Stewart learn the truth behind his father’s disappearance at the end of World War II, when aliens arrive on Earth from a mysterious reigon of space known only as the Realm. This book features the return of Lethbridge-Stewart’s brother from another reality, James Gore, and his father, Air Commander Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart!

Andy continues: “This series of books sees our lead characters, in particular Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne Travers, dealing with the fallout from the losses they suffered in series four. The series ends on something of a cliffhanger, which will have repercussions for the series as a whole for a long time.”

Head of Publishing Shaun Russell says: “Series five is the last in the ongoing series for a while, as next year we’re stepping out of the usual narrative to present a special series of novels celebrating fifty years of Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne Travers.”

The New Unusual, A Very Private Haunting and The Man from Yesterday are all available for individual pre-order now, for £8.99 (+ p&p). Or you can pre-orderthem as part of the discounted UK bundle for only £26.25 (including postage), saving £9.72, or an international bundle for only £45.00 (including postage), saving £5.97.
