AFFIRMATIVE! CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO’S ‘TIN DOG’ K9

AFFIRMATIVE! CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO’S ‘TIN DOG’ K9

K9

Today we are showing our appreciation for one of the Doctor’s most beloved companions, the all-knowing and adorable K9.

The robotic canine first appeared on our screens on Oct 1, 1977 in the Fourth Doctor adventure, The Invisible Enemy. Over the years K9 has left and returned, most memorable with Sarah Jane Smith in the 2006 episode, School Reunion, starring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.

Here’s our handy guide to four decades with the tin dog!

One Previous Owner

As we discovered in the aforementioned story The Invisible Enemy (pictured below), K9 was actually built by Professor Marius in the year 5,000. Described by his maker as a “computer”, Marius had to return to Earth and gave K9 to the Fourth Doctor and Leela.

Thankfully, he was TARDIS-trained.

The Invisible Enemy

There’s more than one!

In even more shocking news, K9 is not unique. The original left with his mistress Leela at the end of the 1978 epic, The Invasion of Time.

But, being the sentimental sort, the Doctor couldn’t live without his little chum and so immediately had a Mark II ready to go!

The Stones Of Blood

This version accompanied the Doctor and Romana on a hunt for the Key To Time (pictured above being repaired in The Stones of Blood) and eventually left with, fittingly, Romana II as the denouement of the 1981 four-parter, Warriors’ Gate. Sadly, this time, there was to be no replacement.

Or was there…?

The Leisure Hive

Not a master of all terrains

Though a well-informed and talented computer, K9 lacked a certain something when it came to alien (and sometimes human) worlds.

The marshes of Kroll (in The Power Of Kroll), Brighton beach (The Leisure Hive, pictured above) and even the streets of Paris (City of Death) all proved too much for K9, and had to sit out entire adventures with his master and mistress.

K9 & Company

First Doctor Who Spin-Off!

1981’s K9 & Company left you in no doubt who was the star of the show. K9 returned or, rather, Mark III made his debut on the very first Doctor Who spin off, K9 & Company.

Sarah Jane Smith was sent him as a present from the Doctor and the two soon became firm friends. K9 Mark III would reappear briefly in 1983’s The Five Doctors and then again in…

School Reunion

He’s back, again!

… 2006’s School Reunion. K9 Mark III made the ultimate sacrifice and saved Deffry Vale School after it had been overrun with Krillitane.

But, yet again, everyone’s favourite Time Lord couldn’t resist creating a replacement. The Tenth Doctor left Sarah Jane with another K9, Mark IV if you will, to keep her company and protect the Earth.

Journey’s End

The Sarah Jane Adventures

The following year, the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures launched with K9 making an occasional appearance to help out on Bannerman Road and also returned to Doctor Who to save the day in dramatic style in the Series 4 finale, Journey’s End(pictured above).

And, let’s not forget, K9 was reunited with the Tenth Doctor in a 2009 story from The Sarah Jane Adventures. The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith (pictured below) saw the Time Lord team up with Sarah Jane’s chums and come face to face with The Trickster.

The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith

Remember the time K9 was on The Weakest Link?

Back in 2007, the lovable robot was a contestant on a very special Doctor Who edition, The Weakest Link (a quiz show which appeared in the 2005 finale). K9 appeared alongside Wholumni such as David Tennant (The Tenth Doctor), Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith) and Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman.

Sadly, our little chum was voted off in first round by his “friends”…

The Weakest Link

All of K9’s adventures are available on DVD.

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: ’48 Crash

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: ’48 Crash

In tribute to the 50th anniversary of BBC Radio 1, Candy Jar Books has announced a Kindle-only short story, ’48 Crash by Mark Carton.

The celebratory tribute comes as BBC has revealed plans for a three-day “vintage” digital radio station beginning on Saturday 30th September. The free story will go live on Amazon Kindle on this same day.

Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar Books, said: “Having grown up listening to BBC Radio, I’ve been waiting to hear what they had planned for the 50th anniversary of Radio 1. It seemed like a fantastic opportunity to celebrate a British institution that has had such an impact over the years. When Mark suggested that he’d like to write a short story to mark the event, I thought that combining his core idea with the Lethbridge-Stewart range was a no-brainer.”

The weekend commencing Saturday 30th September will see 50 one-hour themed shows compiled from Radio 1 archive material, featuring DJs from across its entire history, to be broadcast on a sister station, Radio 1 Vintage. To coincide, ’48 Crash will be available to buy from Amazon Kindle for only £1.29 from Saturday 30th as well.

Shaun continues: “This celebratory release aligns with our Kindle release of the individual short stories featured in our limited edition HAVOC Files one through three. Each short story will now be available to download from Amazon Kindle individually for £1.29. Customers who previously missed the PDF e-books will be able to read each story in isolation without having to commit to the whole load. This is something we’ve been asked for many times. You ask, we do!”

Mark Carton has been an avid follower of the Lethbridge-Stewart range, and is the author of Candy Jar children’s novel The League of the Red-Nosed Gentlemen.

He says: “The Brig is an iconic part of Doctor Who history, which itself, of course, an iconic part of the BBC’s story too. In tribute to Radio 1’s Birthday, we thought it would be fitting if he returned to the fold, so to speak, to help out Auntie once again! It’s an action-packed tale, and a little irreverent, which we thought was befitting of Radio 1’s ethos. Lethbridge-Stewart must solve a mystery encoded in some of the popular hits of Radio 1’s early days. When the music’s over, does he succeed? I’ll leave that to the readers to find out!”

A PDF version of ’48 Crash will also be available to customers who purchase The Flaming Soldier from the Candy Jar website.

It is also possible to pre-order a preview copy of the new Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off, The Lucy Wilson Mysteries, announced last month. The book is due to be released widely in early 2018, but limited copies are available now via the Candy Jar website: http://www.candy-jar.co.uk/books/bumpersummersale.html .

Candy Jar Books is also offering an exciting new opportunity for aspiring writers. Launched at the Candy Jar Book Festival in Cardiff this year, the Candy Jar Lethbridge-Stewart Short Story Competition invites writers to submit a short story based on the Doctor Who character Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

This story is free from Candy Jar when you buy The Flaming Soldier. It is £1.29 via Kindle.

More details about how to submit can be found at the Candy Jar Books Festival website here: https://www.candyjarbookfestival.co.uk

A new Doctor Who attraction “could” be coming to Cardiff

A new Doctor Who attraction “could” be coming to Cardiff

There could soon be good news for Doctor Who fans mourning the loss of a Cardiff Bay attraction.

The Doctor Who Exhibition closed its doors in September despite more than 12,000 people signing a petition against its closure.

Campaigners said the venue brought tourism, provided jobs and provided an economic boost for the area.

But a senior councillor has now revealed that a new Doctor Who attraction could come to the city.

Cabinet member Russell Goodway has also said that discussions are ongoing about the future of the building in Cardiff Bay to find a future use.

Coun Goodway said that if a new lease is secured a “number of potential leisure-based uses” would be considered by the council.

In response to a written question by Lib Dem Councillor Emma Sandrey, Coun Goodway said “discussions had been ongoing with BBC Worldwide to secure a replacement Doctor Who related attraction in the city”.

Now he says he is ready to share proposals about that new attraction with councillors.

He told councillors he has agreed to involve Lib Dem Councillor Rodney Berman and leader of the opposition Conservative Adrian Robson to be involved in those discussions.

The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay opens and closes its doors for the last time this Saturday. Scores of people queued for the last day at The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay.

“I can confirm that my officials have now indicated that they are in a position to share proposals and a meeting will be arranged shortly”.

Coun Goodway also said that there could be a new use for the building which housed the exhibition in Cardiff Bay.

“In terms of the former Doctor Who Exhibition building in Cardiff Bay , discussions are ongoing with both Igloo, the land owners, and Welsh Government, with a view to agreeing an extension of the lease arrangements following the expiry of the original five year lease.

“If a new lease can be secured, there are a number of potential leisure based uses for the building that the administration will consider. I will make a statement in the near future regarding the financial impact on the council of the original decision to bring the Doctor Who Experience to Cardiff Bay”.

At the time the closure was announced, BBC Worldwide said that the exhibition had “enjoyed a fantastic five-year run in Cardiff Bay but, sadly, our five-year sub-lease from Cardiff council will come to an end in summer 2017.

“As to opening somewhere else, we are not sure yet.”

In response, Cardiff council said the land was owned by the Welsh Government and their development partner, Igloo Regeneration.

“It was leased to the council for five years to enable its relocation from Olympia to Cardiff on a temporary basis.

“It has always been the intention for the site to be developed as part of the ongoing Porth Teigr regeneration project.

“The agreement was always intended to be for five years only, reflecting the nature of the attraction.

“The decision to close the Experience at the end of the lease next summer has been mutually agreed by all parties involved, including the operators BBC Worldwide.”

Cardiff council was asked for more details about the new plans hinted at by Coun Goodway but said it was unable to comment.

Alex Kingston wants a River Song/Captain Jack Harkness episode in Doctor Who

Alex Kingston wants a River Song/Captain Jack Harkness episode in Doctor Who

In all their years on BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, it’s hard to believe that popular characters Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and River Song (Alex Kingston) have never shared screentime.

Both time-travelling lotharios who love conning their way around the galaxy with a vortex manipulator, we can’t help but feel they’d do well in their own Doctor Who spin-off, or even just an episode where they finally meet – and now it turns out that River Song actor Alex Kingston feels the exact same way.

“I think it’d be great if she met with Captain Jack Harkness,” Kingston said at Edmonton Expo in Canada. “It’s funny because John and I, we talk about, we imagine, fantasise about all the possibilities.”

And with change afoot in the Whoniverse, Kingston thinks River and Jack’s time is now – even if it is just for a guest storyline.

“Certainly I think that now Chris Chibnall is showrunning, it would kind of be fantastic,” Kingston said.

“Not necessarily a spin-off show, but it kind of would be great if even the Doctor happened upon a bar in the universe where River and Captain Jack happened to be sitting, having a drink or something. I think it’d be cool!

“So, tweet about it,” she concluded, a call to action that we’re sure dedicated Who fans will take on.

However, Kingston said there could be just one snag – exiting series showrunner Steven Moffat, who created River for the Doctor Who role and has been the sole storyteller for her adventures since.

“Obviously Steven is no longer showrunning, but I think Steven is very attached to the character of River,” she said. “I mean he killed her off right at the beginning, but I think it was sort of not easy him to necessarily completely let her go.

“Hence I think the reason why one night in Darillium is 25 years. I mean, we’re not even past breakfast yet.

“Steven wouldn’t let anyone else write for my character. So it’s whether he now graciously releases River into the hands of other writers. It’d be nice if he did! So we’ll see.”

Fingers crossed Mr Moffat will finally cut the apron strings and let the River/Jack spin-off episode (or series) come to fruition. The world of Doctor Who NEEDS this to happen.

RUSSELL T DAVIES REVEALS WHICH OF HIS DOCTOR WHO EPISODES IS HIS FAVOURITE

RUSSELL T DAVIES REVEALS WHICH OF HIS DOCTOR WHO EPISODES IS HIS FAVOURITE

Doctor Who

Former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and author James Goss have been taking part in a special podcast to celebrate their book of Doctor Who poetry, Now We Are Six Hundred.

The Now We Are Six Hundred Questions Podcast features actor Richard E. Grant interviewing Davies and Goss with a selection of poems read by impersonator and comedian (and Doctor Who fan!), Jon Culshaw.

Grant is well-known to fans having played the Doctor on two occasions (1999 Comic Relief special written by Steven Moffat, The Curse of Fatal Death, and the 2003 online animation, Scream of the Shalka) and starred in Doctor Who Series 7 as the human face of the Great Intelligence.

Russell was asked by a fan what his favourite Doctor Who episode to write and make was, he replied:

“That’s the tricky one because, of course, they are all my children and you can’t have favourite children – yes, you can!

The one I have a particularly sentimental fondness for is an episode called Gridlock. Simply because it’s the first script I wrote entirely in Cardiff.”

Gridlock
Brannigan, the Tenth Doctor and Valerie in Gridlock

Gridlock was first broadcast in 2007 and starred David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. It featured Brannigan, as played by Ardal O’Hanlan, with wife Valerie, as played by Jennifer Hennessy (who recently played Bill’s foster mother Moira in Doctor Who Series 10).  The episode also included the final scene for the Face of Boe, who had an enigmatic message for the Time Lord.

Russell explained why Gridlock holds such a special place in his heart:

“I used to shuttle to and fro between Manchester and Cardiff and that one I was entirely in Cardiff when I finished and love it for that reason.

Making it was mad and brilliant and very, very difficult for the team.

It’s about a 23 year old traffic jam, only Doctor Who could do that – you wouldn’t get that on Star Trek! It’s a purely Doctor Who idea.”

Russell T Davies reveals the surprising career advice he got from Princess Diana

Many Doctor Who fans will know that former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has made a surprising return to the world of the Whoniverse (although he’d argue he never really left), with the Welsh screenwriter illustrating a book of Doctor Who poems (written by James Goss and on sale now) after putting his old drawing talents on the back burner for decades.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, Davies pondered whether in a different life he could have been a full-time illustrator – “I think I’d be rather good by now, if I’d had a solid 30 years,” he said – but it’s now emerged that drawing wasn’t the only creative career choice Davies passed up to become the worldbeating screenwriter we know him as today.

And bizarrely, this other alternate passion was encouraged by none other than Princess Diana, the iconic royal figure who died tragically in a car crash in 1997.

“I last wrote a poem when I was 18 years old,” Davies recalled in a recent episode of The Doctor Who Fan Show (via DoctorWho.tv), where he was interviewed alongside James Goss.

“This poem was for, and presented to (and I was there), Princess Diana on her inaugural tour of Wales in 1981.

“They put on a show in Swansea. Marvellous show. A Youth theatre in West Glamorgan, brilliant youth arts, youth dance, youth band, youth orchestra. So they needed some poetry for the second half linking it all together and I wrote a poem.”

And Davies’ involvement didn’t end there, with the young creative acting as God in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ one-act ballet Job: A Masque for Dancing and actually meeting Diana after the performance.

“So I’m in a leotard standing there as Princess Diana comes down the aisle and she literally turned round to me and went, ‘Oh, it’s God!’” Davies recalled.

“And she said, ‘What are you going to do later on in life?’

“And I said ,’I don’t know, I haven’t made my mind up yet,’ and she went, ‘Dance, dance, dance!’

“That was my career advice from Princess Diana, to be a dancer! One day I’ll go back to this. I’ve gone back to drawing, one day the dance will come back.”

Of course, Doctor Who fans will be glad that Davies originally hung up his dancing shoes to bring cutting-edge drama to the screen instead – but if he does ever fancy returning to the world of the soft-shoe-shuffle, we’d be the first in line for tickets.

Russell T Davies on the casting of Jodie Whittaker, and the source of most Doctor Who leaks…

Russell T Davies continues to promote the newly-released Now We Are Six Hundred, the book of Time Lord poetry that’s been penned by James Goss, and illustrated by Davies himself. And his latest interview stop has been the Radio Times, where he’s been talking about Jodie Whittaker’s casting in Doctor Who, and also, where leaks of news come from.

Davies is long known to be a fan of Whittaker in the role – “it was amazing”, he said of the announcement – but also reckoned he’d guessed. “I didn’t know, but her name did start hitting the papers that day, and when a name hits the papers like that out of the blue you think ‘someone, someone’s blabbed, someone somewhere, an agent’”.

He explored that further, pointing to where the bulk of Doctor Who leaks come from. “It’s always a lad in the agent’s office. That’s where every leak comes from – not the agent themselves, but someone doing the photocopying. So I kind of thought someone’s kind of let something slip there by mistake”.

He reiterated, though, that the casting was “brilliant”. Whittaker is shortly to start filming work on the new series of the show, too…
