BBC Store to shut its doors in November

BBC Store to shut its doors in November

The service was launched with some fanfare in November 2015

A BBC service that let people buy and “keep” BBC shows is to close less than two years on from its 2015 launch.

A spokesman for BBC Store said demand had not been as strong as had been hoped and that it did not “make sense” to invest in the service further.

BBC Store was intended as an extension of the BBC iPlayer, where content expires 30 days after broadcast.

A message on its website said the BBC would “continue to find new ways of making BBC archive content available”.

“We do hope you enjoyed discovering some wonderful programmes, old and new,” the message added.

More than 7,000 hours of TV was initially made available through the BBC Store, with shows typically costing £1.89 an episode.

Offerings included Early to Bed, a rarely seen Alan Bleasdale work from 1975, and The Power of the Daleks, a “lost” Doctor Who adventure from 1966 that was reconstructed in animated form.

The Power of the Daleks was among the service’s more high-profile offerings

With hit programmes such as Sherlock and Doctor Who available on subscription sites Netflix and Amazon Prime, though, the BBC Store found there was less demand to download programmes to keep.

Viewers will be able to watch their purchases via the BBC Store website or through the BBC Store app until 1 November, after which they will no longer be available.

Customers will be refunded for the shows they have purchased, either in cash or with Amazon Video vouchers.

Those who opt for the latter will receive 10% more than they are owed, as a goodwill gesture.

A BBC representative would not reveal how many people would be affected but said the service had been part of the corporation’s attempts to generate income outside the licence fee.

The Pyramid at the End of the World

This week’s episode of BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who will have a section of dialogue removed as a mark of respect to victims of Monday night’s terrorist attack in Manchester, RadioTimes.com understands.

The excerpt in question from upcoming story The Pyramid at the End of the World made passing references to terrorism as part of a more general discussion of threats to Earth, but the BBC has decided that as a matter of sensitivity it should be removed.

The rest of the episode will remain unchanged and will air in its scheduled BBC1 slot of 7:45pm on Saturday 25th May.

“Following the tragic events in Manchester, we have made a small edit to this week’s episode of Doctor Who,” a BBC spokesperson told RadioTimes.com.

This is not the first time the BBC has been moved to alter an episode of Doctor Who due to real-life tragedy, with the Corporation previously re-editing 2014 story Robot of Sherwood when elements of the story echoed real-life atrocities committed by Islamic State.

The Manchester attack has resulted in numerous changes to the TV schedules this week. On Tuesday, Jimmy McGovern’s new northern drama Broken was replaced on BBC1 by an episode of Blue Planet, while Channel 4 drama Ackley Bridge has been edited to remove a hoax bomb plot storyline. And due to the suspension of general election campaigning, Andrew Neil’s interviews with party leaders Theresa May, Paul Nuttall and Tim Farron have also been postponed.

Doctor Who is on BBC1 on Saturday at 7:45pm

Doctor Who Crossover Featuring Four Doctors Announced

Doctor Who Crossover Featuring Four Doctors Announced

Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension:

Doctor Who fans are deep into the 10th season of the beloved BBC series, but they’re going to want to take a break to check out Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension, a crossover event featuring four Doctors from Titan Comics.

The Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors will need to come together to face a threat that no one Doctor could face alone.

The event kicks off in the Alpha issue being released on Titan’s “Doctor Who Comics Day” global event on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017. The story continues in the Ninth Doctor special on the same week.

According to Titan’s description, Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension, “is an epic event – comprised of eight chapters over three months – crossing over all four ongoing series (Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctor comics). The event will begin a new era for Titan’s Doctor Who comics, and will find the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctor playing their part to battle The Void!

“The Void has always existed: ‘No place. The silent realm. The lost dimension.’ But the Void is no longer empty. The Void is hungry and devouring our universe – through time and space. Now, the four Doctors must join forces to save…everything!”

Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension will begin with the Alpha issue, which is being designed as a jumping on point for new readers, from writers George Mann (Eleventh Doctor), and Cavan Scott (Ninth Doctor), with art by Rachael Stott (Twelfth Doctor) and Rod Fernandes!

Doctor Who: The Lost Dimensions’ Alpha Issue will ship with three covers, including a special embossed foil TARDIS cover, a photo cover by Will Brooks, and a multi-Doctor mash-up by Rachael Stott and Luis Guerrero.

More details on Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension are still to come.

While Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension will feature the four modern Doctors, the BBC is busy casting the thirteenth. The tenth season of Doctor Who will be the final season for Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. It will also be the final season for producer and showrunner Steven Moffat, who will hand the job over to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall, who will introduce a new Doctor in Doctor Who’s eleventh season. It is unclear if new companion Bill Potts, played by Pearl Mackie, will stay with the series.

Don’t Blink!

If ever there was a man who could make astutely rib-tickling political observations, it’s Armando Iannucci.

The man who gave us The Thick of It (and Peter Capaldi’s fabulously foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker) knows how to put a brilliantly satirical spin on politics, so it’s little wonder he’s already rolling out the humdingers ahead of election day on 8th June.

Iannucci was a guest on the first episode of the new series of The Last Leg on Friday night, and while talking about party politics with Adam Hills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdecombe the conversation strayed into Doctor Who territory.

The writer – whose Malcolm Tucker now controls the Tardis – couldn’t help but notice that incumbent Prime Minister Theresa May’s manner of revealing less popular policies was rather similar to the attack strategy of a major Doctor Who villain.

“I think most people are genuinely confused by Theresa May because  she’s trying to appeal, make it look like it’s no longer the nasty party, it’s the nice party, appealing to the middle. And then these strange other policies creep in,” he began.

“I was trying to think what she reminds me of and it’s the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who, because we’re all nice and it’s “NO SCHOOL LUNCHES”… “NO HEAT!”

Whatever your opinion of Iannucci’s political parallels, you can’t make your voice heard unless you’re ready to use it in the polling booth. Register to vote now.

He may have travelled to the furthest reaches of the universe, but Geordies won’t be surprised to learn that The Doctor loves the Toon.

Appearing at Newcastle’s Film and Comic Con this weekend, Sylvester McCoy, the actor who played the seventh incarnation of the time-travelling hero in the BBC TV series Doctor Who, spoke about his love for the city.

He told us he was visiting to “celebrate science fiction and fantasy” at the annual festival, but he was happy to be here because “I love Newcastle , anyway”.

What is it the actor, who also appeared in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films, likes so much about our city?

Pretty much everything, by the sounds of it.

“I love the bridges, I love the architecture, the food, people.”

Though some aspects of the city did seem to baffle him.

Possibly displaying some of the slightly wacky humour that marked his earlier appearances in the beloved show, he said: “I’m here in the Metro Radio… Centre – weird name, anyway, I don’t know why it’s called ‘Metro’ because there’s not even a Metro near it, but hey ho.”

(For the record, Sylvester, the Metro Radio Arena is sponsored by Metro Radio, our local radio station – but we’re sure you knew that anyway.)
