LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SPIN-OFF NOVELLA BOOK 2 THE FLAMING SOLDIER

LETHBRIDGE-STEWART SPIN-OFF NOVELLA BOOK 2 THE FLAMING SOLDIER

Candy Jar Books is pleased to release the cover art for the second Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off novella, The Flaming Soldier, designed by Richard Young.

Richard says: “For this second cover I wanted to create a full colour image rather than my usual mix of colour and black and white. I had also backed myself into a corner with The Life of Evans. I found it quite difficult to fade the hand-drawn train explosion into the background, so here for the first time I decided to create the fire effects digitally, though Travers and Eileen are still pencil drawings.”

Written by Christopher Bryant, the book features a younger Travers, alongside real-life World War 2 heroine Eileen Younghusband, who passed away in September 2016. Christopher says: “In The Last Duty Eileen was only a cameo. Her inclusion came quite late to the mix, and despite her character hinting at a past fighting aliens, we didn’t fully explore this, so when the opportunity came along to delve deeper, I jumped at the chance.”

Shaun Russell, head of publishing at Candy Jar, says: “Eileen worked in the Filter Room, the top secret hub of Britain’s air defence, and tracked the first V2 rocket into the country! Before she died, I had a brief conversation with her about our Lethbridge-Stewart series. We joked about her being the first person to track an alien rocket into the country and this sparked an idea. Her sad death prompted us to include her in The Last Duty, but now we feel the time is right to discover more about Eileen’s alien fighting exploits during WW2.”

Eileen made an appearance in The Last Duty alongside her fictional cousin, Captain Younghusand. Quentin Younghusband, Eileen’s real-life nephew, is really pleased that Eileen’s legacy will live on. He says: “My aunt would have been tickled pink at the fact that she is a central character in this the latest book in the Lethbridge-Stewart series.”

Richard Young continues: “I was aware of Eileen from seeing her on the TV, but I never knew just how famous she was until I did my preliminary research. It turns out that she lived quite a life, so there was no pressure to get her portrait right… not! I’m pleased to say that the feedback I received from the family totally blew me away. I just hope that I have done her justice for all her fans.”

Eileen’s numerous television appearances included the BBC series, Britain’s Greatest Generation, Channel 4’s WW2: The Last Heroes, and the ITV Wales programme Welsh Heroes of World War Two, as well as BBC’s Breakfast, The One Show and Eggheads. Her book One Woman’s War won a People’s Book Prize. Her final book Eileen’s War was written for children and was completed and published only weeks before her death.

Bringing in a younger Edward Travers is all part of range editor Andy Frankham-Allen’s grand plan. He says: “Travers’ life between The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear is still pretty much unexplored, bar a few hints here and there. It has already been established that he worked for a previous version of the Home-Army Operational Corps during World War 2, but this is our first look at what his work entailed. It’s all part of a much larger canvas, as we slowly unveil the hidden mysteries and secrets of Professor Travers’ remarkable life.”

Blurb:

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is investigating a series of cases of spontaneous combustion. How can an inferno start inside a brick wall? Who or what are the ghost-like creatures spotted in the area around Imber base? Does it have anything to do with Eileen Younghusband, hotel proprietor, whose ordinary day is about to be interrupted by secrets from her past? Traumatic events from the Second World War impact upon the present day and a mysterious aircraft could hold the key to the identity of the flaming soldier.

The Flaming Soldier is available for pre-order now, for £12.99 (+ p&p), and will be which published in hardback, with a strict print-run of only 400 copies. You can pre-order individually or as part of the discounted novella UK bundle for only £38.40, saving £9.57, or an international bundle for only £55.59, saving £7.40. Everything you need to know about Doctor Who series 10 episode 1

Everything you need to know about Doctor Who series 10 episode 1

Everything you need to know about Doctor Who series 10 episode 1

It’s not long until Doctor Who returns for its tenth series, and we understand you’re hungry for details – so with that in mind, here are the key points of what to expect from the upcoming first episode.

What’s it called?

The long-awaited first episode of Doctor Who series 10 will be called “The Pilot”.

While the name probably refers to an aspect of its plot, it’s also almost certainly a reference to the series’ attempt to rebrand itself, acting as a “pilot” episode for a series that will be something of a reboot and which showrunner Steven Moffat has described as a good “jumping on point” for anyone who’s never watched Doctor Who before.

When is it on TV?

The Pilot will air on BBC1 on Saturday 15th April at 7:20pm.

What happens in it?

The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) meets new companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) while working as a lecturer in a university. Introducing her to his weird and wonderful world, the Doctor must soon also give her a crash course in his greatest enemy as they face the deadly Daleks.

The official synopsis reads:

Two worlds collide when the Doctor meets Bill. A chance encounter with a girl with a star in her eye leads to a terrifying chase across time and space. Bill’s mind is opened to a Universe that is bigger and more exciting than she could possibly have imagined – but who is the Doctor, and what is his secret mission with Nardole on Earth?

Steven Moffat told Radio Times…

“What’s the one thing you never see when you look at your reflection?”

Meet Bill Potts. She works at St Luke’s University, serving chips to students, and nothing ever, ever happens. Then, one day, she finds there’s another world beneath the one she knows. A familiar face in a pool of water, and a love that is over before it can begin, will change her life for ever – because this is the day Bill meets the Doctor.

Who’s in it?

Peter Capaldi returns to the lead role with new companion Pearl Mackie making her debut as Bill Potts. Stephanie Hyam also guest stars as Heather, aka the Wet Dalek Lady (above), with Matt Lucas’s part-time companion Nardole also returning.

Who’s written it?

Steven Moffat has written The Pilot, which is directed by Lawrence Gough.

Who are the baddies?

The Daleks are the only known monster to appear in this episode, though there may be other foes for the Doctor and Bill to face.

John Simm’s role in Doctor Who could be a lot bigger than we thought

John Simm’s role in Doctor Who could be a lot bigger than we thought

John Simm’s role in Doctor Who could be a lot bigger than we thought
John Simm as The Master

The news last week that John Simm’s Master will be returning to Doctor Who alongside his successor Michelle Gomez was met with a huge amount of excitement from fans – even if the assumption was that it would be a relatively brief cameo. After all, how could it have remained such a well kept secret if there had been anything other than a minimal amount of filming on a closed set?

Well, the answer to that turns out to be surprisingly simple – kind people and a bit of luck – and it also poses the very real possibility that we will be seeing a lot more of the maniacal blond Time Lord than we had first expected.

“We kept it a secret because people in Cardiff are very kind,” the series’ executive producer Brian Minchin told RadioTimes.com exclusively at the BFI & Radio Times festival this weekend.

“He was there for quite a few weeks, he was actually filming on the streets and nobody saw him, and he was in the studio.”

That sounds like a pretty substantial appearance to us. Maybe not multiple episodes, but at the very least a good chunk of one story.

According to Minchin, the interplay between Simm and Gomez is “superb”.

“We were so thrilled by the idea of it, we were delighted,” Minchin told us. “Because John loves Doctor Who, and he loves the whole world of it, so when he heard what [showrunner Steven Moffat] is planning, which I won’t tell you, but when John heard what Steven was planning he was so excited.

“It was brilliant to have him on set – he’s a real joy to have around.”

Minchin at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival on Sunday

And it seems the Doctor Who team aren’t too disappointed that the news about Simm leaked out early, despite having originally intended to keep the details under wraps for a while longer.

“When people heard John Simm was back they were excited and they were happy, so I’d be a bit churlish to be complaining about that,” Minchin said.

“And one of the things about Doctor Who is we’re a show people like to find out news about, and that they like to get excited about, and that’s a good thing really. It’d be a bit mean-spirited to whinge about that.

“If you think you know the spoilers of Doctor Who series 10 you’re wrong,” he added. “There’s loads more to come.

“The story of Bill and Peter is going to take some very surprising turns, things are gonna happen to the Doctor that have never happened to him before, and Matt Lucas is going to surprise you as well in his character, what you see from him. And we’re building to the most amazing finale ever!”

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on Saturday 15th April at 7:20pm

The Doctor Who Series 10 Episode Guide

Episode 1: The Pilot

Written by Steven Moffat, directed by Lawrence Gough

Meet Bill Potts. She works at St Luke’s University, serving chips to students, and nothing ever, ever happens. Then, one day, she finds there’s another world beneath the one she knows. A familiar face in a pool of water, and a love that is over before it can begin, will change her life for ever – because this is the day Bill meets the Doctor.

Episode 2: Smile

Written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, directed by Lawrence Gough. Guest star: Ralph Little

In the far future, at the edge of the galaxy, there is a gleaming, perfect city. This brand-new human settlement is said to hold the secret of human happiness – but the only smiles the Doctor and Bill can find are on a pile of grinning skulls. Something is alive in the walls, and the Emojibots are watching from the shadows, as the Doctor and Bill try to unravel a terrifying mystery…

Episode 3: Thin Ice

Written by Sarah Dollard, directed by Bill Anderson

In Regency England, beneath the frozen Thames, something is stirring. The Doctor and Bill arrive at the last of the great frost fairs and find themselves investigating a string of impossible disappearances – people have been vanishing on the ice! Bill is about to discover that the past is more like her world than she expected, and that not all monsters come from outer space.

Episode 4: Knock Knock

Written by Mike Bartlett, directed by Bill Anderson. Guest star: David Suchet

Bill is moving in with some friends and they’ve found the perfect house! So what if it’s strangely cheap to rent, and the landlord is a little creepy? The wind blows, the floorboards creak and the Doctor thinks something is very wrong. What lurks in the strange tower at the heart of the building – and why can’t they find any way to enter it..?

Episode 5: Oxygen

Written by Jamie Mathieson, directed by Charles Palmer

The Doctor, Bill and Nardole answer a distress call in deep space, and find themselves trapped on board space station Chasm Forge. All but four of the crew have been murdered – and the dead are still walking! In a future where oxygen is sold by the breath, and space suits are valued more highly than their occupants, the Tardis crew battle for survival against the darkest evil of all.

Episode 6: Extremis

Written by Steven Moffat, directed by Daniel Nettheim. Guest star: Michelle Gomez

In the Haereticum (the Vatican’s secret library of blasphemy) there is an ancient book known only as The Veritas. Throughout history, anyone who has ever read it has immediately taken their own life. Now a new translation is online, and the danger is spreading. The Vatican appeals to the Doctor. Will he read The Veritas? But can even the Doctor survive the ultimate truth?

Episode 7: The Pyramid at the End of the World

Written by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat, directed by Daniel Nettheim

A 5,000-year-old pyramid stands at the centre of a war zone, where the Chinese, Russian and American armies are about to clash. There are many problems with that, but the one that intrigues the Doctor is this: there wasn’t a pyramid there yesterday. The Doctor, Bill and Nardole face an alien invasion unlike any other – before conquest can begin, these aliens need the consent of the human race.

Episode 8: The Lie of the Land

Written by Toby Whithouse, directed by Wayne Yip

The world is gripped by a mass delusion and only Bill Potts can see the truth. When even the Doctor is fighting on the wrong side, it’s up to Bill to convince the Time Lord that humanity is in deadly danger. And if she can’t do that, she may just have to kill her best friend.

Episode 9: The Empress of Mars

Written by Mark Gatiss, directed by Wayne Yip

The Doctor, Bill and Nardole arrive on Mars and find themselves in an impossible conflict between Ice Warriors… and Victorian soldiers. As the Martian hive awakes around them, the Doctor faces a unique dilemma – this time the humans, not the Ice Warriors are the invaders. When Earth is invading Mars, whose side is he on?

Episode 10: The Eaters of Light

Written by Rona Munro, directed by Charles Palmer

A long time ago, the Roman legion of the ninth vanished into the mists of Scotland. Bill has a theory about what happened, and the Doctor has a time machine. But when they arrive in ancient Aberdeenshire, what they find is a far greater threat than any army. In a cairn, on a hillside, is a doorway leading to the end of the world.

Episode 11: World Enough and Time

Written by Steven Moffat, directed by Rachel Talalay. Guest star: Michelle Gomez

Friendship drives the Doctor into the rashest decision of his life. Trapped on a giant spaceship, caught in the event horizon of a black hole, he witnesses the death of someone he is pledged to protect. Is there any way he can redeem his mistake? Are events already out of control? For once, time is the Time Lord’s enemy…

Written by Steven Moffat, directed by Rachel Talalay. Guest star: Michelle Gomez
