What will be the Casualties of War? Find out in Doctor Who – War Doctor 4, coming soon…

The War Doctor will return in February 2017 for Doctor Who – The War Doctor: Casualties of War, and this time a figure from his past has come back to confront him. Leela, warrior of the Sevateem, will meet the warrior of the Time War. And she may not like what she finds…

‘The idea of having John Hurt and Louise Jameson performing in this fourth set of War Doctor stories was irresistible,’ says producer David Richardson. ‘They are two of my favourite actors, so to have them firing off each other in some brilliant scripts was wonderful to watch. During one take, everyone in the control room was left in floods of tears. While this isn’t the Doctor that we’re used to, neither is Leela the woman we once knew…’

‘We’ve got great variety across the three stories,’ adds script editor Matt Fitton. ‘At the start, the Doctor and Cardinal Ollistra have been thrown together by circumstances and there’s a lovely exploration of their spiky relationship as they try to escape their predicament. There’s real emotional heart to the reunion with Leela, followed by an epic confrontation in a pivotal battle in the Time War as we reach the finale.’

Casualties of War comprises three full-cast audio dramas, in which the War Doctor and Ollistra (Jacqueline Pearce) are stranded far from their Time Lord forces, with Daleks closing in, destroying all that stands between them. They must call on the help of new friends and old to fight their way back to the front lines.

In Pretty Lies by Guy Adams, a war reporter named Schandel may provide the key to their escape, but it is often said that the first casualty of war is the truth. When the choice between grim reality and a hero’s story means life or death, will the Doctor allow Schandel to print the legend? Joe Kloska plays Schandel, Mark Elstob is Editor, while Julia Hills plays Sera.

‘It’s all about heroes in a way,’ says Guy. ‘John Hurt is certainly one of mine. As far as the War Doctor is concerned though, he doesn’t believe he should be described as one. But what do others think? And what makes them think it? The things he’s done? Or the stories they’ve been told about him?’

The Lady of Obsidian by Andrew Smith sees the return of Leela, as the Doctor seeks help from a shadowy guerrilla force when a Dalek Strike Fleet heads to destroy another defenceless world. Lizzie Roper guest stars as Rosata Laxter, while Chris Porter is Skaul.

Finally in The Enigma Dimension by Nicholas Briggs, the Dalek Time Strategist has a new plan to ensure final victory in the Time War. As its forces gather for a huge assault on the enemy, ahead of the fleet something hovers above the planet of the Time Lords. And on Gallifrey itself, shadows move among the Cloisters.

As Nick explains: ‘My intention with this story was to do something a little unexpected. As the final instalment, surely, you might think, it should be a gigantic battle, a real showdown. But I wanted to reduce to something really rather personal and very disconcerting. Stand by to be boggled.’

Doctor Who – The Time War Saga bundles are available on Download and CD at £100 for either format, collecting together all four of the War Doctor sets as well as next year’s Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor: The Time War release. Doctor Who – The War Doctor 4: Casualties of War can be pre-ordered for £20 and is released in February 2017, while the other releases in the range, already available, can be found here.

NINTH DOCTOR CHRISTMAS SPECIAL – WRITER’S COMMENTARY

NINTH DOCTOR CHRISTMAS SPECIAL – WRITER’S COMMENTARY

Cavan Scott commentary images

Recently, we published a very special treat for fans of the Ninth Doctor – an exclusive ‘Christmas Special’ from writer Cavan Scott. You can read it here.

Find out more about the Ninth Doctor adventures from Titan Comics here.

Below, you read what Cavan has to say about his Ninth Doctor ‘Christmas Special’ short story, and why he wanted to give Nine his very own festive outing.

“Ever since I received the call to write the Ninth Doctor comic, I’ve wanted to give Nine the Christmas special he missed out on TV. Doctor Who’s Christmas specials started with the Tenth Doctor’s debut, The Christmas Invasion, so he never really had one. Of course, we had The Unquiet Dead, which is full of festive fear, but the idea nagged away at me so I asked Titan Comics about the possibility of writing something a little Christmassy this year as a thank you to everyone who’s supported the Ninth Doctor comic. ‘Christmas Special’ is the result.

alt text

I also knew I wanted to bring back our very own Slitheen from ‘Doctormania’ (which is out as a collected edition in January – blatant-plug, fans!) Slist was such a fun character to write, and the thought that she would go on to have her own chat show just seemed right for the media-loving con-artist.

The short story was also a chance to introduce more people to Tara Mishra, our new companion from the Ninth Doctor comic. Tara is a former UNIT nurse who worked with Harry Sullivan and first encountered the Doctor, Rose and Jack in Bristol in the story ‘Official Secrets’, which concluded this month in issue eight. We kick off her first story as a companion next month with part one of ‘Slaver’s Song’. This two parter is a special one for the team.

alt text

After setting ‘Official Secrets’ in my home town of Bristol, I wanted to take the TARDIS to Brazil, more specifically São Paulo, the home of our wonderful artist Adriana Melo. I mentioned this to Adriana and she came back with bundle of ideas, including a colonial setting and Lara, a mermaid from Brazilian mythology. Adriana was also keen to include the Bandeirantes, 17th Century Portuguese fortune hunters and slave traders. We started bouncing ideas back and forth, with Adriana researching possible locations and authentic character names from the period.

The story also worked perfectly for the arc that we’ve been running through the series, as Captain Jack searches for his lost memories. Why does Jack find a portrait of himself dressed as a 17th Century Jesuit Priest, and why does everyone in colonial São Paulo know him as Father Julian Horta? Find out as we enter a new year with this new companion for the Ninth Doctor!”

DOCTOR WHO: THE NINTH DOCTOR

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

By Cavan Scott

“Doctor! What’s happening?”

Rose clung to the shuddering console. It was either that or be thrown across the TARDIS control room. At the moment, she didn’t know which was the better option.

“We’re being dragged out of the Vortex,” the Doctor yelled back, as sparks rained down from the cluster of tubes and cables above the central column. “Some kind of tractor beam.”

“Can’t you do something?” Tara asked from the battered flight-seat behind Rose. The Doctor shot the Sri Lankan girl his most wilting of withering looks. “Oh. I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks.”

“Doctor!” Rose snapped. Tara hadn’t been travelling with them for long, and while Rose still wasn’t sure what she thought of the former UNIT nurse, she didn’t deserve the Doctor’s sarcasm, especially when the TARDIS was flying apart around them.

“Don’t worry,” he replied, snatching up a mallet and thumping the console repeatedly. “I know exactly what I’m doing.”

The Doctor’s control panel blew up in his face, throwing the Time Lord half way to the doors.

The TARDIS went into free fall, the raucous engines ten times louder than usual. Rose lost her grip and tumbled from the console, winding herself as she hit the metal floor.

It was a moment before she realised that all was calm again. The only thing still spinning in the TARDIS was her head.

alt text

“Have we landed?” Tara asked, helping Rose back to her feet.

The Doctor was already at the console, wafting smoke away from the wrecked panel. “Looks like it, but your guess is as good as mine.”

“So much for knowing what he’s doing,” muttered Rose, giving Tara a conspiratorial smile.

The Doctor ignored her, rushing towards the TARDIS doors.

“Shouldn’t we check the scanner, or something?” Tara said, taking after him.

“Nah,” said the Doctor. “Checking’s for wimps. Trust me, I do this all the time!”

He threw open the door and stepped outside.

That’s when the first tentacle wrapped around his waist.

“Doctor!” Rose shouted, as he was yanked out of sight. She barged past Tara and barrelled out of the Police Box to see the Doctor struggling against not just one but nine rubbery arms.

“Oi, leave him alone,” Rose yelled. She grabbed the nearest tentacle, just as a pair of robotic pincers closed around her arms.

“Oi, leave me alone!” She told the barrel-chested security robots that had grabbed her and Tara.

alt text

“THIS WAY PLEASE,” the android barked in a monotone voice. “IT IS TIME TO TAKE YOUR SEATS.”

Rose struggled, but it was hopeless. She called out to the Doctor as they were hauled away, but he was too busy playing cat’s cradle with the tentacles that snaked around him like Boa constrictors. It was funny. If Rose didn’t know better, she could have sworn that one of the feelers was dabbing the Doctor’s furious face with a bright pink powder puff…

Rose and Tara were deposited unceremoniously on the front row of what looked suspiciously like an audience, albeit one made up of aliens of all shapes, sizes and colours.

Tara tried to get up, but found herself unable to move.

“GRAVITY CHAIR,” the security-bot explained. “TO STOP ANYONE RUSHING THE STAGE. WE DO NOT WANT A REPEAT OF WHAT HAPPENED WITH SHOWADDYWADDY. ENJOY THE SHOW.”

“Show?” Rose asked. “What show?”

Lights blazed on in front of them. Rose’s mouth dropped open as she found herself looking at a kitsch television studio. When she was a kid, her Mum had got free tickets to see the Des O’Connor Show being recorded. This set was nearly identical, except for the hovering cameras operated by robots the size of dolls. There was a large chair, presumably for the host, next to a long red sofa. Drinks were already poured on a low glass table and the glitzy studio walls were strewn with garlands. The festive scene was completed by a large holographic Christmas tree sparkling with thousands of fairy lights. There were even what looked suspiciously like snow machines just a few metres from their seats.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” boomed a cheesy voice from hidden speakers. “Please welcome your host – Slist Fayflut Marteveerthon Slitheen!”

alt text

“It can’t be,” said Rose, as a tall green-skinned alien bounded onto the set. The audience went wild as the creature waved to her fans with long, curved claws.

“Who’s that?” Tara whispered.

“A Slitheen we met not long ago. A con-man. Well, a con-girl… It’s kind of complicated.

“Thank you, thank you,” the Slitheen preened, playing to the crowd. “And welcome to The Slist Show Christmas Special!”

A fresh round of applause burst from the audience.

“I’m so glad you could join us,” Slist continued, a camera swooping down to zoom into her smiling face. “We’ve a sack-load of Chrimbo treats this evening, including a live performance from none other than Hattie Munroe and the Space Pirates!”

The Slitheen nodded as the crowd showed their appreciation.

“But before that, we have a very special guest. Ladies, gentlemen and gender-neutral entities, please put your hands, tentacles and/or claws together for… the Doctor!”

Rose and Tara shared a worried glance as a door slid open near the Christmas tree and the Doctor was thrust into the limelight. He turned on his heel, looking around himself in bemusement, before his blue eyes fell upon the Slitheen who was standing with her arms held open as if expecting a hug.

“Slist? Slist is that you?”

“Who else would it be?” the Slitheen replied, ushering him towards the overstuffed sofa. “Come, come. Make yourself comfortable.”

The Doctor played along, scanning the audience as he sat beside Slist. His eyes met Rose and he silently mouthed: Are you OK?

She nodded as Slist shuffled a set of interview cards in her claws.

“So, Doctor. Long-time no see. Tell us, what have you been up to?”

The Doctor turned to Slist with a question of his own. “What is all this?”

alt text

“What is it? Why, Christmas, of course, you big silly!” Slist threw her arms wide, nearly taking out one of the Doctor’s eyes with her claws. “Oops, sorry! You’ll have to forgive me. I get so excited at this time of year. All the lights, the carols…” She leant towards the Doctor and grinned. “… the record-breaking ratings!”

“You’ve got your own chat show,” the Doctor said, shaking his head. “Of course you have.”

Slist laughed warmly. “Well, you did help me broadcast my face to the entire galaxy. I thought you would be pleased. Finally, I’m being myself.”

“Kidnapping passing time-travellers. Yeah, it sounds like you.”

Slist waved the barb away. “Come now. It is the season of goodwill after all, which is exactly why we invited you as our special guest.”

The Doctor’s eyebrows shot up. “Invited? Is that what you call it?”

Slist ignored him, turning back to the camera. “Our next guest is someone the Doctor hasn’t seen since he toppled their regime, and shot them through a rift through time and space.”

Rose shifted in her chair. This didn’t sound good. On set, the Doctor agreed.

“Slist,” he said, leaning forward on the sofa. “Who are you talking about?”

The Slitheen winked at the camera. “You know him best as the Butcher of Barakanamor, the man voted War Criminal of the Millennium four times over…”

“Slist!”

“That’s right,” the host said, rising from her chair. “It’s General Yolaktorin of the Retjarvik-Sattavarian!”

The Doctor was on his feet in an instant, grabbing her arm. “Slist,” he hissed, the microphone just about picking up his words, “you can’t be serious! Yolaktorin is a madman; a tyrant.”

alt text

“Come now, Doctor,” she said, throwing off his hand and addressing the camera.

“Christmas is a time for forgiveness! Let’s see if you two can bury the hatchet live on TV!”

“He’s more likely to bury the hatchet in my head!”

But it was too late. The doors slid back again to reveal a colossal figure wearing heavy battle armour. The audiences whooped and cheered as the former despot snarled at the welcome, revealing a row of serrated, stained fangs. If he ever found himself in a police line-up, Yolaktorin could easily have been mistaken for the Devil, from the curved horns on his gigantic head to the pointed tail that squirmed like a snake behind his hoofed legs.

“General!” Slitheen said, beckoning the giant onto into the light. “Don’t be shy. Come and join the Doctor on the sofa!”

“Doc-torrrr,” Yolaktorin growled and swaggered forward, all muscles and murderous intent. No sooner was he in the glare of the spotlights than the Retjarvik-Sattavarian threw back his head and let loose a blood-curling roar.

To her credit, Slist put herself in front of the Doctor, extending a long arm to protect her star guest. “Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea after all. Let’s go to a commercial break.”

The General lunged towards the sofa, still bellowing.

“Doctor, run!” Rose shouted. “He’s going to attack!”

“No!” the Doctor called back. “He’s not. He’s in pain!”

“What?” Slist said as the Doctor and ran to Yolaktorin who dropped to his knees, his claws raking the studio floor. Rose glanced up to a monitor as the cameras zoomed in on the monster’s skin. It was steaming beneath the studio lights, ulcers bubbling between the General’s scales.

alt text

The Doctor’s sonic screwdriver buzzed as he scanned the Retjarvik-Sattavarian. “It’s his make-up, reacting to the lights. Kill the lamps! Now!”

Slist was already deep in conversation with her producers, one of her claws to her earpiece. “You heard the man! Shut everything down! I don’t care if audience-appreciation figures are going through the roof! It’s Christmas! We can’t have someone melt in front of a live studio audience.”

“Too right,” said the Doctor, swinging his glowing Sonic around to face the crowd.

“Let it snow!”

With a roar, the snow machine surged into life, pumping tons of fake flakes into the air. With another buzz of the Sonic, the Doctor released Rose and Tara from their seats, telling them to point the machines at the General. Rose was there before Tara, twisting the snow cannon so the writhing alien was smothered in a heap of polystyrene balls.

Tara ran to the Doctor’s side and, scraping away a handful of snow, examined Yolaktorin’s blistered hide. “He’s badly burnt, but at least his skin’s stopped sizzling.”

“Because he’s no-longer exposed to the light,” the Doctor said, turning to Slist.

“Where’s your make-up girl?”

There was the sound of slithering tentacles to the side of the audience and then a shout as the studio’s burly security-bots grabbed the fleeing beautician.

“Bring her out here,” Slist yelled, but the Doctor put his hand on the Slitheen’s arm.

“No, she’s suffered enough.”

“Suffered?” Slist blustered. “She nearly killed one of my guests.”

“The dictator who butchered most of her race.”

Slist’s face fell. “He did what?”

“She’s a Chapadio. I should have realised when she was applying my foundation. Yolaktorin nearly eradicated the Chapadio during the first year of his reign. Tell me – who suggested having the General as a guest?”

Slist’s shoulders slumped as she looked to the ground. “She did. The network’s going to cancel us for sure.”

“Serves you right,” the Doctor said, as a camera whirred in front of his face, trying to get a reaction shot. “And as for you lot at home, haven’t you got something better to do than sit on your backsides watching the box? It’s Christmas. Have a family argument or something. Fa-la-la-la-la!”

And with that, the Doctor pointed his Sonic Screwdriver at the camera and TV screens all over the galaxy switched off as one.

Meet the lucky fans who introduced the Doctor Who 2016 Christmas special

Meet the lucky fans who introduced the Doctor Who 2016 Christmas special

Meet the lucky fans who introduced the Doctor Who 2016 Christmas special
Doctor Who Christmas 2016 special The Return of Doctor Mysterio.

It’s one of the biggest jobs in TV, introducing the Doctor Who Christmas special, the first new Who episode for a year, to the millions of viewers at home.

And this year, the BBC has given over this coveted role to a select group of – very lucky – Doctor Who fans. The group were brought together to film a special continuity announcement ahead of Doctor Who Christmas 2016 special The Return of Doctor Mysterio.

Earlier this year, the BBC asked for Doctor Who fans to get in touch to take part in filming the continuity message. Doctor Who is just one of the shows to get the fan treatment this year – Call the Midwife, Bake Off, Mrs Brown’s Boys, Strictly and EastEnders will all have their own special messages.

Southend Who fan Sue Heal was one of the lucky ones to be part of the Doctor Who filming. “I saw a message on Twitter from someone at the BBC saying they needed Doctor Who fans for some filming in London,” she explained. “I contacted her and she emailed with some details saying it was for a short promo clip to introduce the Christmas episode.”

Alison McClean

Belfast-based Alison McClean (above) also saw the message, and flew to London in October especially to take part: “We set off at 3am and got to London, we had a great day doing a bit of sightseeing and then met the transport that was to take us to the Rivoli Ballroom where filming was to take place.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPHiVMd_gew#action=share

“There were about 15 of us there,” Sue adds. Producers had kept exactly what was involved a secret – it was only when they filed in to film the scene that they realised what was going on…

“They said when we went through into the room we needed to stand very close together at first, it was only when we actually walked into the room we saw this was the Tardis!” Sue says.

“We all had to walk through, look around as we had just landed there, and then stand and smile towards the camera.”

The Tardis, Weeping Angels, even a Dalek – a dream day for fans (and, presumably, a much-appreciated day off for the BBC’s regular continuity announcers).

Although, Alison’s day didn’t quite end the way it should have done.

Filming had overrun – and Alison had a flight to catch to get back to Belfast.

“We did a couple of run throughs… and then at 7.15pm I had to leave,” she says. “I would not have missed the experience, however to be so close and then end up not even in the intro is horrible!”

For Sue, the wait for Christmas Day has been doubly exciting: a new Doctor Who episode, and a special appearance.

“Being a Doctor Who fan, to be filmed along with some other fans coming out of the Tardis to introduce the episode was just fantastic, I’m so glad I was part of it,” she says. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished clip for the introduction on Christmas Day – as well as being excited to see the actual episode.

“Watching Doctor Who will be the highlight of my Christmas, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the new series next year.”

The Official Series 10 Trailer

The Official Series 10 Trailer

Doctor Who companion Bill sees the universe anew in the series 10 trailer

From Pearl Mackie bolting from the Daleks to emoji battlebots, the Return of Doctor Mysterio ended with an action-packed glimpse into the future…

Stop what you’re doing, unless the thing you’re doing is raking through every frame of the new Doctor Who series 10 trailer. And if you’re not marvelling at the unseen monsters, mind-blowing settings and new companion Pearl Mackie in action then you’re about to.

Why? The end of the Who Christmas special, The Return of Doctor Mysterio, handed out a present Whovians have been waiting for all year: a glimpse at series 10. And as it turns out we were given a very big glimpse.

In fact, the trailer is almost TARDIS-like with an incredible amount of Who action packed inside a deceptively small space. You’ll need to watch closely to digest the full magnificence of the Doctor’s sonic shades, the emoji robots and David Suchet’s mysterious “Landlord” character.

Didn’t quite catch everything in one go? Don’t worry, we were thinking of getting you socks for Christmas, but instead decided to wrap up a complete breakdown of the trailer. Enjoy!

Doctor Who will return to BBC1 in April 2017
