DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE 502
DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE LOOKS AHEAD TO THE NEW SERIES IN ISSUE 502!
As Matt Lucas and Pearl Mackie join Peter Capaldi in the TARDIS, we ask showrunner Steven Moffat how it feels to be working on his final series…
“When I agreed to do one more run, I thought, ‘Sod it, I’m not doing the march to the scaffold,’” says Steven. “I want it to feel like a brand new show. I want it to feel like Episode 1 of a new series. I want to leave like it’s all just beginning.”
The issue also includes an interview with casting director Andy Pryor, who talks about the decision to cast Pearl Mackie as the Doctor’s new companion, Bill…
“Pearl has this sort of boldness, and an ability to tap into the humour of the part without making it an overtly comic performance,” says Andy. “From the word go, she made the part her own. She found things in the part that none of us had envisaged, and she made Bill a rounded person.”

Joss Whedon says he’ll write for Doctor Who – when the Doctor is a woman
Buffy creator reckons it would be “daunting” to write for the BBC series.
Joss Whedon writing an episode of Doctor Who sounds like a match made in Heaven – but he’s got a few ground rules.
Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con’s Nerd HQ, the Buffy creator was asked if he’d consider writing for the BBC series.
“Check back with me when the Doctor is a she…” he hinted, “…or Idris Elba!”
Whedon’s the latest big name to throw his support behind the notion of a female Doctor – with ex-Who star Matt Smith recently suggesting that “a lady Doctor could be close“.
Further on the topic of writing for Doctor Who, Whedon said it would be “very daunting” to “following in the footsteps of Moffat and the guys.”
“I’m not sure [if I’d do it] – and here’s why,” he said. “I’d have to do a lot of research – like, what, watch 40 years of television? I mean, I’ve seen some of it, but let’s get real.”
Joss, get binge-watching. Steven Moffat (or Chris Chibnall?), get him on the phone.
We need this to happen.
Doctor Who will return to BBC One in December for a Christmas special, with a full series to follow in 2017.
Moffat Doesn’t Think He’ll Be Writing Capaldi’s Regeneration
Steven Moffat has said he believes he will not be writing the Twelfth Doctor’s exit when he departs as Doctor Who showrunner with the 2017 Christmas special.
Speaking in the latest Doctor Who Magazine (#502) Moffat says: “I have no reason to suppose that I’m writing out a Doctor! Peter is loving the role, and long may he do so.”
This does align with previous Capaldi comments stating he had been invited to stay on for Chris Chibnall’s Series 11, although Capaldi did also say he had not made his mind up back then.
Moffat further talks about how he thinks he’ll approach his final episode and whether they’ll be a ‘victory lap’ like with Russell T Davies’ and ‘The End of Time’: “The departure of a showrunner doesn’t mean anything to the audience. Most of the audience doesn’t know that I exist, so they’d go blank if I attempted to wave goodbye to them. Oh, the embarrassment that would be. So I’m damned if I’m imposing my departure on the show. I just want to do a good one, before I hand over to Chris [Chibnall].”
You’ll never guess which soap matriarch this Doctor Who character grew up to be…
SHE is a firm fixture on Coronation Street but in this throwback photo from an old episode of Doctor Who she is literally worlds away from Weatherfield.
Helen Worth, better known to audiences as soap matriarch Gail Platt, has come along away since her role as Mary Ashe in the 1974 serial, Colony in Space.
She portrayed a young colonist living with her family on the desert planet of Uxarieus in the year 2472, whose world is under threat from an unscrupulous mining corporation IMC.
Helen – aged just 20 at the time – starred alongside Jon Pertwee’s third Time Lord and assistant Jo Grant, played Katy Manning, and managed to help save her people.
However, since her stint in the sci-fi favourite, Helen has made a name for herself in soap land after taking on the part of Gail in 1974.

She also has three children: Nick Tilsley (Ben Price), David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and Sarah-Louise (Tina O’Brien), who also have their own troubles.
Most recently, David helped to bury the body of drug dealer Callum Logan (Sean Ward) underneath Gail’s granny annexe before an inexplicable car crash led to the discovery of the corpse.
Meanwhile, Nick ended his marriage to Carla Connor (Alison King) and the pair went their separate ways just days after tying the knot.
The star has received a number of accolades for her performance as Gail, including the gong for Outstanding Achievement at The British Soap Awards in 2014.
Along with her Coronation Street commitments, Helen also has credits in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Oliver! and she also played one of the von Trapp family’s children in a production of The Sound of Music at the Palace Theatre in London at the tender age of 12.
She is a philanthropist and is the patron of the Born Free Foundation, which aims to protect endangered wildlife across the world.
Helen supports ActionAid as well, which provides children with eduction in developing countries.

David Tennant will play the Tenth Doctor again… on Family Guy
Tennant starred in Doctor Who as the tenth doctor between 2005 and 2010.
The actor also spoofed his time on Doctor Who on The Late Show with Stephen Colbertearlier this year.

He’ll star in cut away section ‘Doctor Who Farted’ – yes, really.
Doctor Who fans, this is the David Tennant news you’ve all been waiting for!
Well, not quite… It’s been revealed that the actor will reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor again, but only as part of a cameo appearance on Family Guy.
It’s been revealed that Tennant will voice the doctor in a ‘Doctor Who Farted’ cutaway gag – of all the news from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, this might just be the wackiest.
And for those of you want a bit of a sneak peek at Tennant back in action as the Doctor, the new sizzle reel is here to help you out from about 1 minute and 5 seconds in.
It might not be the news fans were hoping for, but we’re still looking forward to seeing his cameo role and enjoying how awkward and pretty hilarious it looks like it’s going to be.
