Pearl Mackie's Doctor Who outfit is already on display

Pearl Mackie has only been a Doctor Who companion for a matter of days… but she’s already an important part of the show’s story.

So much so that her outfit teased in the Who companion announcement video has already become part of the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff.

Mackie wore an embellished denim jacket and a Prince t-shirt when she was first introduced as new companion Bill – and that costume is now on display for fans to get a closer look at.

DOCTOR WHO: THE SEVENTH DOCTOR REUNION

DOCTOR WHO: THE SEVENTH DOCTOR REUNION

This summer, the Seventh Doctor and Ace find an old friend returning to the TARDIS. Melanie Bush is back in action in the next Doctor Who Main Range trilogy!

Reunited for the first-time since 1987’s Dragonfire, Sylvester McCoy, Bonnie Langford and Sophie Aldred return to the Vortex in a new trilogy of Doctor Who Main Range adventures, beginning in July 2016.

‘I’ve loved teaming the Seventh Doctor up with both Mel and Ace,’ says script editor Alan Barnes. ‘I thought they were a companion combination with a huge amount of untapped potential – earnest, perky Mel makes for a fantastic contrast with untamed, sarky Ace. And with the conclusion of our Hex saga, it seemed an opportune moment to look in on Mel, and find out what she’s been up to since leaving the TARDIS. Quite a lot, as it turns out!’

‘Mel is this supposed calm voice of reason and Ace is the adventurer but actually that flips quite often and they give each other support in their weaker areas at different times when they need it most,’ says Bonnie. ‘There doesn’t seem to be any rivalry – it’s a team effort. They both have the same purpose in mind which is to support the Doctor and make sure that good triumphs over evil.’

‘And there’s a real fondness there,’ adds Sophie. ‘Ace is still calling Mel “doughnut”, for example!’

The trilogy’s first instalment is Doctor Who: A Life of Crime by Matt Fitton, released in July.

‘It finds an on-the-run Mel pitching up on the paradise planet Ricosta – a sort of space Costa del Crime for lowlifes seeking to retire with the proceeds of their illegal activities,’ says Alan. ‘But when she runs into the Doctor and Ace, will they even recognise her as the Mel they once knew…?’

August’s Doctor Who: Fiesta of the Damned is written by Guy Adams, making his debut on the Doctor Who Monthly Range.

‘It’s a horror-adventure story in which the TARDIS lands in 1938, slap-bang in the middle of the Spanish Civil War,’ explains Alan.

‘There’s always a tragic element to historical war stories,’ says Guy, ‘that crushing awareness we the audience have, knowing where events will lead. We’re all time travellers when experiencing historical stories, we know the future.

‘Not that Fiesta of the Damned is a straight historical of course. There were countless horrors in the Spanish Civil War but they didn’t include alien machinery and legendary chimera wandering the streets of a remote Spanish village.’

Matthew J Elliot provides September’s Doctor Who: Maker of Demons, after helping to set up the trilogy in Dead to the World, part of Doctor Who: You Are the Doctor and Other Stories.

‘It takes the three of them to another conflict,’ says Alan, ‘this time on the tempestuous planet Prosper – where the Doctor and Mel are forced to face up to the consequences of one of their former adventures.’

JAGO & LITEFOOT: SERIES 11 FROM THE WORLDS OF DOCTOR WHO

JAGO & LITEFOOT: SERIES 11 FROM THE WORLDS OF DOCTOR WHO

The Master is on the loose in Victorian London – can Jago, Litefoot and the Sixth Doctor save the city? The next release in our classic Doctor Who spin-off series is available now!

Henry Gordon Jago (Christopher Benjamin) and Professor George Litefoot (Trevor Baxter) are Victorian London’s resident Infernal Investigators. Since meeting each other in Doctor Who: The Talons of Weng-Chiang, they’ve defended the British Empire from the paranormal and the alien, with the help of loyal barmaid Ellie Higson (Lisa Bowerman) and the dashing Inspector Quick (Conrad Asquith).

After the curious events of Jago & Litefoot: Series 10, a cloaked killer is stalking the streets; one who will do anything to survive! The Master (Geoffrey Beevers) is on the loose, and it will take all of our heroes’ expertise to thwart his insidious plans. Can the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) offer his assistance?

11.1. Jago and Son by Nigel Fairs

With missing persons, dead bodies and a Satanist cult to deal with, both Litefoot and Jago need help. Professor Litefoot finds himself working with Jean Bazemore, an old archaeologist friend. Jago, however, finds he is assisted by someone he never even knew existed – his own son. Or is he? Can Jago be sure of anything?

But there is more to events than the detectives know. An alien menace is stirring underground. Once again, Jago and Litefoot find themselves fighting for their lives…

11.2. Maurice by Matthew Sweet

As he tightens his grip on Inspector Quick, the Master becomes interested in the young composer Maurice Ravel. For his part, Ravel befriends Professor Litefoot. But is anyone truly who they seem or able to control their own destiny and actions?

When Litefoot goes missing, it’s up to Jago to investigate. But the Professor finds himself in a nightmare landscape where reality and fiction seem to have merged. Will he ever manage to escape? And if the real Maurice Ravel is trapped with Litefoot, who exactly is walking the streets of London?

11.3. The Woman in White by Simon Barnard and Paul Morris

The great actor Henry Irving is not as great as he once was. In fact, he’s awful – a shadow of his former self. Worried that something may be terribly wrong, Irving’s assistant Bram Stoker enlists the help of an old friend – Henry Gordon Jago.

With Irving’s state deteriorating, Professor Litefoot also faces a challenge. He performs an autopsy on a man who has had all his bodily fluids drained from him. Can the detectives discover the connection between the great actor and the mysterious dehydrated corpse? And how does it relate to the Woman in White who supposedly haunts Irving’s theatre?

11.4. Masterpiece by Justin Richards

The Master’s plan is nearing completion – and he is sure that Jago and Litefoot will help him bring it to fruition. With Inspector Quick increasingly under the Master’s influence, the Infernal Investigators find themselves tired and fatigued, as if their very life force is being drained away…

With the help of Ellie together with stage hypnotist Madame Sosostris and her assistant Mr Nocturne, Jago and Litefoot finally track down the Master. But as they make their way towards his lair, the Time Lord’s true scheme is revealed.

DOCTOR WHO: THE WAR DOCTOR 3: AGENTS OF CHAOS

DOCTOR WHO: THE WAR DOCTOR 3: AGENTS OF CHAOS

This Autumn, the War Doctor faces Sontarans, an invasion of Earth and the Dalek Time Strategist! The Time War continues…

John Hurt returns as the War Doctor in September 2016, in three full cast audio plays from Big Finish productions. Doctor Who – The War Doctor 3: Agents of Chaos is the third volume in the ongoing saga, in which the War Doctor and Cardinal Ollistra (Jacqueline Pearce) are thrown deeper into the Time War.

The set opens with The Shadow Vortex by David Llewellyn, in which the Time Lords have detected that their quantum shield protecting Earth has been breached by the Daleks, and the War Doctor is sent to Berlin 1961, at the height of the Cold War, to investigate. There he finds that the Daleks have their own agent on the scene… That agent is played by Neve McIntosh, best known to Doctor Who fans as Madame Vastra of the Paternoster Gang, while the cast also includes Honeysuckle Weeks as Heleyna.

‘I was given a very open brief: Send the War Doctor to Earth,’ says David. ‘So then I started thinking, “Where on Earth (literally) can I picture the War Doctor?” and the first image that came to mind was Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate in the early ’60s – checkpoints in place, the boundary between East and West. Time War meets Cold War. Then I pictured a Dalek saucer landing right in front of it. Then I pictured the skies above Berlin swarming with Daleks. Then I got really, really excited and I started to write.’

In The Eternity Cage by Andrew Smith, the Sontarans continue their campaign to join the Time War – while the Time Lords and the Daleks refuse to allow them to join in. This may change, however, when the Sontarans score a victory over both sides…

The story will be Andrew’s second set in Time War after the upcoming release of The Sontaran Ordeal in Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters Volume 1.

Dan Starkey (also known for playing the Paternoster Gang’s butler Strax) is the Sontarans, while Josh Bolt (Last Tango in Halifax, Benidorm) plays Kalan.

‘I was asked to write a story taking for its inspiration Alistair MacLean’s Where Eagles Dare,’ says Andrew. ‘So we have an apparently impenetrable fortress on a mountaintop, and the Doctor leading an elite group on a rescue mission. But instead of the German army trying to stop them, it’s Sontarans! With the Daleks not far away either.’

The fate of Gallifrey hangs in the balance in Eye of Harmony by Ken Bentley, in which the Daleks gain the upper hand, while the Doctor and his allies fight to stay alive against all odds.

‘I grew up watching war films,’ says Ken. ‘They were a staple of weekend viewing when I was a boy, so it was great to have the opportunity to explore the genre in Doctor Who, where we generally avoid anything too dark. But even more exciting is the fact that I’ve written a play for John Hurt. JOHN HURT!! If you’d told me that might happen when I first started working for Big Finish I wouldn’t have believed you.’

The box-set also introduces a new player into the Time War – the Dalek Time Strategist, who is voiced, as with the Daleks, by Nicholas Briggs.

‘At the end of Dark Eyes, and the defeat of the Dalek Time Controller, it was hinted that a new ‘Time Strategist’ would be created in its wake…’ explains script editor Matt Fitton.

‘Daleks never go to war without a plan, and a Time War needs a special kind of planner, capable of viewing the field of conflict through four dimensions and beyond. This is the Dalek Time Strategist: a time-sensitive war-leader, utterly dedicated to achieving Dalek victory over the Time Lords by any means it can.’

You can pre-order Doctor Who – The War Doctor 3: Agents of Chaos today for just £20 from the Big Finish website. As with the majority of Big Finish titles, a complimentary digital copy is included with all CD orders – so you do need to wait to hear the next epic battle from the Time War!

Michelle Gomez was devastated when Jenna Coleman left

Michelle Gomez was devastated when Jenna Coleman left

Michelle Gomez praised her co-star Jenna Coleman

HER character Missy may have enjoyed terrorising Doctor Who companion Clara Oswald, but actress Michelle Gomez was very upset when actress Jenna Coleman departed from the TARDIS.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet, the 49-year-old star described the recent casting of Pearl Mackie as the Time Lord’s new assistant Bill as “brilliant”.

However, she added: “I am devastated and sad to see Jenna going but I had a while to get used to it because we knew about it ahead of time.

“So I’m excited for her [Pearl], I’m excited for the show and new energy.”

Can we expect to see more of the Doctor’s nemesis in series 10 of the rebooted sci-fi series? “I don’t know about that but even if I did, I couldn’t tell you,” Michelle teased.

The Scottish actress said that she didn’t see her character as a “villain”, joking that her looks made it difficult for her to be cast in other less nefarious roles.

“That’s the problem with this face it’s difficult to cast this face as anything other than a villain. I’m just making my money out of it, having this scary thing,” she quipped.

She was nominated for her performance as the devilishly delightfully female incarnation of The Master in the Supporting Actress category but ended up losing out to This Is England ‘90’s Chanel Cresswell.

John Barrowman: might Captain Jack be returning?

John Barrowman: might Captain Jack be returning?

John Barrowman has teased that he’s returning to Cardiff for a secret project soon. Could it be a return to Doctor Who?
After he brought back Alex Kingston’s River Song for last year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, it’s starting to look like Steven Moffat may repeat the trick this year by bringing back another long-time absentee from the supporting cast for a festive reprive.
John Barrowman has teased that he has work in Cardiff in the near future, which has led the internet to suggest that he could be appearing in the 2016 Doctor Who Christmas special. Or maybe even the spin-off series, Class.

For the record, all Barrowman said – while promoting his new book in a Welsh Waterstones – was that “I will be back in Cardiff in about a week and a half… but I’m not telling you what for!”
That’s enough to get a rumour started, since the Welsh capital is synonymous with the production of Doctor Who at this stage. Perhaps it’s a bit soon to get excited, but the idea of Captain Jack Harkness bantering with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is a tantalising proposition, isn’t it?

This chimes well with one particular statement from Capaldi: “I don’t know whether [the new companion] would be involved in the Christmas special, because it’s so specific, the story we’re doing with the companion.”
To kill a bit of time before Pearl Mackie’s Bill shows up then, Mr Barrowman may just get his chance to return to the Whoniverse.

Of course, we’ll let you know as we hear any more about this rumour.

Amy Pond, Rory Williams & Missy pose for awesome selfie

Missy, Amy Pond and Rory Williams know how to do a Doctor Who crossover

What happens when you put Amy Pond, Rory Williams and Missy together in the same room?

Now that’s a Doctor Who episode we’d like to see.

Could this be the ultimate Doctor Who crossover? Amy Pond, Rory Williams and Missy all got together for an awesome selfie recently, and our inner geek is freaking out about it.

Arthur Darvill, Karen Gillan and Michelle Gomez posed for the picture at Ottawa Comic Con on Saturday (May 14).

Wouldn’t it be great to see them all together on the show? Chris Chibnall take note…

Darvill also posted a picture of himself meeting a Dalek, and judging by his caption, he was pretty traumatised by the whole experience.

Meanwhile, Steven Moffat is currently plotting series 10 to air in 2017 – marking his swansong as Doctor Who showrunner.

Doctor Who fans can now get their hands on Peter Capaldi’s new Sonic Screwdriver

Doctor Who fans can now get their hands on Peter Capaldi’s new Sonic Screwdriver

Peter Capaldi

Doctor Who - Sonic Screwdriver

Four light modes. Four sound effects. Still can’t break a Deadlock Seal.

After messing about with those Sonic Sunglasses, The Twelfth Doctor FINALLY got a brand new Sonic Screwdriver in season nine’s ‘Hell Bent’.

And now Doctor Who fans can have a faithful recreation of Peter Capaldi’s second Sonic .

It’s the first Sonic Screwdriver to have FOUR light modes and FOUR sound effects, though we imagine it’ll still have trouble with those pesky Deadlock Seals.

“The Doctor has carried many Sonic Screwdrivers of various designs throughout his lifetimes, using the numerous settings on the multipurpose tool to open most locks, detect all manner of deadly rays, read bio-signs, and generate sonic waves of great power,” reads the blurb – and you can do the same (sort of).

It’s on sale now in North America, shipping from the BBC Shop US and Doctor Who Shop US for $29.98, and for $37.98 from the BBC Shop Canada and Doctor Who Shop Canada.

And don’t worry UK fans – it’ll be on British shelves in June and is available to pre-order now for £16.99.

If you order sharpish then you’ll get a free gift of an exclusive pack of three trading cards from the Twelfth Doctor’s limited edition.
