THE ESSENTIAL DOCTOR WHO: THE TIME LORDS

The makers of Doctor Who Magazine continue their acclaimed series of bookazines with a 116-page issue devoted to the Doctor’s own race!

The Time Lords includes exclusive interviews with Terrance Dicks (co-writer of The War Games), Stephen Thorne (who played Omega in The Three Doctors), Michael Jayston (the Valeyard in The Trial of a Time Lord), Douglas Mackinnon (the director of Listen) and T’Nia Miller (who played the female incarnation of Gallifrey’s General in Hell Bent). In another of the issue’s highlights Andrew Smith – the writer of the 1980 story Full Circle – interviews Lalla Ward, who played the second incarnation of Time Lady Romana.

Elsewhere there are detailed guides to Time Lord books and comic strips, and a look at the complex events of the Time War. Each Gallifrey story receives its own, two-page episode guide. The issue is richly illustrated with rare pictures and previously unseen production designs.

“The events of the last series restored the Time Lords, and their home planet Gallifrey, to the forefront of Doctor Who,” says editor Marcus Hearn. “We’ve brought together that mythology and production information in a guide that covers everything you need to know – from The Time Meddler in 1965 to Hell Bent in 2015.”

The Essential Doctor Who: The Time Lords is on sale now at WH Smith and all good newsagents, price £9.99.

CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON MEETS A DOCTOR WHO FAN WITH ASPERGER SYNDROME

CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON MEETS A DOCTOR WHO FAN WITH ASPERGER SYNDROME

A young Doctor Who fan inspired by Christopher Eccleston’s stint on the show gets to meet his hero in a heartwarming new video.

Gerard Groves – a BBC apprentice with Asperger syndrome – spoke to Eccleston to promote the actor’s role in new drama series The A Word.

The actor – who starred in a single series of Doctor Who in 2005 – is visibly moved as Gerard recalls his childhood experiences, and how a certain Time Lord hero inspired him to become a filmmaker.

“I did it in 2005 – so you were one of mine!” Eccleston says, later picking up on Gerard’s use of his old Doctor Who catchphrase… ‘Fantastic!’.

It’s not the first time that Eccleston has tugged at our heartstrings by dipping back into the world of Doctor Who – in December, he played the ninth Doctor again in a touching message recorded for a sick fan.

The Emmy winner plays Maurice Scott, the grandfather of an autistic child, in The A Word, which launched last night on BBC One to strong reviews.

The six-part series continues next Tuesday at 9pm.

PETER CAPALDI CALLS ON THE BBC FOR MORE REGIONAL PROGRAMMES

PETER CAPALDI CALLS ON THE BBC FOR MORE REGIONAL PROGRAMMES

Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi is working on series 10

DOCTOR WHO star Peter Capaldi has urged the BBC to produce more regional content in order to be more reflective of Britain.

The 57-year-old actor called on the broadcaster to “encourage” writing and production from all across the nation.

Asked in a recent interview with the Radio Times magazine what he would change about the corporation if he was given eight billion pounds to spend, Peter said: “I’d have more regional drama.”

The Scottish star continued: “As the BBC is paid for by the entirety of the nation, that should be reflected in its content more.

“High-quality writing and production should be both encouraged and experienced by people all over the country,” he added.

The actor also talked about his favourite television shows; praising Netflix documentary Making A Murderer, Shetland and BBC singing competition The Voice.

Peter, who portrays the 12th Time Lord, also admitted that when he has a spare moment on set he likes to strum on a guitar.

“Doctor Who’s better at the guitar than I am, because some pixies come along afterwards and add some little licks and trills that are not mine,” he confessed.

He admitted that he found it “strange” when he received fan mail, including cushions with his face “all over them” and crocheted versions of himself.

The Thick of It star is set to be reprising his role as the Doctor for the tenth series of the sci-fi show, which is slated to air in spring 2017.

Filming is currently underway in Cardiff on the forthcoming run, which will see a new companion joining the time traveller “imminently” and is thought to be Peter’s last outing as the Doctor.?

TIME LORD PETER CAPALDI TURNS UP IN 80-YEAR-OLD ARTWORK

TIME LORD PETER CAPALDI TURNS UP IN 80-YEAR-OLD ARTWORK

COUNCIL chiefs were stunned to spot Peter Capaldi’s doppelganger hanging about in Glasgow City Chambers.

It seems the 12th Time Lord had hopped in the TARDIS and catapulted himself into the future after appearing in a painting from 1930.
That may not exactly be true, but the Scots actor does bear an uncanny resemblance to a portrait of the city’s former Lord Provost, Sir Patrick Dollan.

The artwork, which has been hanging in the gallery for more than 80 years, was discovered by Councillor Greg Hepburn during his lunch break. He said: “I was on a break and wondered up to the gallery. I looked at this painting and thought ‘that’s the Doctor’.

“I’m quite a great Whovian – a Doctor Who fan. From the red jacket to the hair it was a dead image of Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.
“Some of my colleagues thought it as well and we got on to quite an interesting debate about it. It will have been up there for decades. Maybe it was the Time Lord after all.

He added: “I shiver to think what he was doing here – maybe we had some Zygons of Daleks ready to invade.
“Zygons are characters that take on human form so I wonder which councillor it may have been.

“I was only elected councillor in August so I’m pleased that he first time someone got in touch with me was because of Doctor Who.”
The painting, titled ‘The Red Jacket’, was created by Archibald McGlashan to commemorate Sir Dollan, who served as Lord Provost from 1938 to 1941.
