DOCTOR WHO SPINOFF CLASS WILL AIR ON BBC AMERICA

DOCTOR WHO SPINOFF CLASS WILL AIR ON BBC AMERICA

Coal Hill School from Doctor Who

Patrick Ness’s series will debut sometime this year.

Doctor Who’s new spinoff series has found a home in the States.
During a press tour in Los Angeles this week, it was announced that Class will air on BBC America sometime this year.

Class hails from author Patrick Ness and will be set at Coal Hill School – a recurring feature in both new and classic Doctor Who.

Many of the Doctor’s companions have worked at the school, including Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Clara Oswald.

BBC Three will air the eight-part series in the UK. Air dates will be announced at some point in the future.
Peter Capaldi previously admitted that he hadn’t been asked to appear in Class, even though he wants to be involved.

THE DOCTOR TO TEAM UP WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES

THE DOCTOR TO TEAM UP WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES

The crossover fans have been waiting for is finally here… sort of.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock is the crossover of fanboys’ and girls’ dreams. And while for many that would ideally mean Benedict Cumberbatch on screen with Peter Capaldi (or, let’s be honest, David Tennant or Matt Smith) they may still be interested to hear that the Time Lord and the great detective are joining forces in a new audio drama…

Based on a 1994 Doctor Who novel, All-Consuming Fire sees Sherlock Holmes, played by voice-of-the-Daleks Nicholas Briggs, called in by the Vatican when some of the most dangerous books in the world are stolen from the Library of St John the Beheaded.

Among the suspects, one man stands out. He has no traceable background, refuses to give straight answers and hides behind a pseudonym (can you guess what it is?). However, Holmes and Watson soon realise that the Doctor is in fact their greatest hope as an Old God rises to threaten humanity…

Sylvester McCoy returns as the Seventh Doctor alongside companion Ace (Sophie Aldred), while Sherlock Holmes aficionados will also appreciate the inclusion of a character named Sherringford Holmes – the original name of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary creation.

PAUL MCGANN OPEN TO MORE LIVE-ACTION APPEARANCES

PAUL MCGANN OPEN TO MORE LIVE-ACTION APPEARANCES

The 8th Doctor, Paul McGann, hasn’t ruled out more live-action Doctor Who, as long as it’s “a little bit every now and then”…

Despite his prolific and often terrific audio appearances in the role, Paul McGann’s Doctor has only been seen on screen in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie and 2013’s delightful mini-episode The Night Of The Doctor.

But will he ever appear in live-action form again? Mr McGann himself, it seems, is rather keen on he idea…

“I don’t mind doing a little bit every now and again and stealing all the glory!” “It’s quite fun. You’re coming in at the 89th minute and scoring the winning penalty – yeah, I’ll do that.”

“Whereas poor old [Peter] Capaldi’s gotta do nine months and 16-hour days. Yeah, OK, let him do that. Let someone else do the heavy lifting!” he joked, before going on to explain his feelings towards his time in the role.

“Just on a personal level, if I ever had misgivings – just about being in Doctor Who in the first place, or the nature of it – they’ve long since gone. I really enjoy it. It’s a good family to be part of – and it’s still going places. It’s a lovely thing to be associated with.”

He sounds like a nice chap, doesn’t he?

But the bigger question, of course, is how Steven Moffat or future showrunners could find away to squeeze McGann in without distracting us all too much from the incumbent Time Lord. What made sense during the anniversary year is a little harder to find room for in a standard series of the show, after all.

PETER CAPALDI SENT AN INCREDIBLE THANK YOU MESSAGE TO DOCTOR WHO FANS

PETER CAPALDI SENT AN INCREDIBLE THANK YOU MESSAGE TO DOCTOR WHO FANS

Peter Capaldi sent an incredible thank you message to Doctor Who fans who made him a birthday video

Who knew something some magical could result from a simple Happy Birthday to Who!

Peter Capaldi is no stranger to doing nice things from his fans (he made one ill Whovian’s day when he visited him in hospital in character last year) but his latest offering to loyal followers of the show is particularly sweet.

YouTuber Beth Axford and a group of more than 50 Doctor Who fans rallied together to send Capaldi a Happy Birthday video for his 57th birthday last April (2015) and the 12th Doctor not only took the time to watch the video – he decided to take a break from playing the Time Lord on the set of series 9 to record a very special thank you message for every single person who took part too.

And it was so lovely that Axford uploaded the video to her YouTube channel for all the world – and fans involved – to see.

FIND OUT HOW RIVER SONG MEETS THE EIGHTH DOCTOR – IN THE NEW ISSUE OF DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE!

Doctor Who Magazine finds out what happens when River Song runs into the Eighth Doctor in the new audio series The Diary of River Song – and interviews both Paul McGann and Alex Kingston!

“River has to interact with the Eighth Doctor to save him, to help him,” explains Alex. “When she’s figured out how she can do that without having to be physically present in front of him, alongside helping him, she can then tease and flirt a little bit, because she knows she’s safe, and she knows she hasn’t overstepped a boundary, or changed his or her future in any way by that actual physical interaction. So she can then have fun! She’s in control.”

And what does the Eighth Doctor make of River?

“What the Doctor says to River when he realises her acumen, her calibre, is ‘Wow, hang on a minute – where did you pick up all this?! For an amateur, you ain’t half clever’,” chuckles Paul. “He says, ‘Any time you fancy joining me, I could always do with a pair of hands’. He realises, almost instantly, how clever she is. ‘If you’re ever stuck for a trip round the universe helping me out, you’re on.’ So there’s that lovely playfulness as well. Of course, he’s doing it in blissful ignorance. And she’s trying not to appear too clever, and give the game away, but of course she has to save his life. So it’s great. It’s childish, but it’s great fun.”

ROGER ALLAM WANTS TO PLAY A DOCTOR WHO VILLAIN

ROGER ALLAM WANTS TO PLAY A DOCTOR WHO VILLAIN

Endeavour’s D.I. Fred Thursday wouldn’t mind switching sides to take on The Doctor.

He’s probably best known to TV viewers as Endeavour Morse’s boss and man of the law D.I. Fred Thursday but Roger Allam wouldn’t mind finding himself on the wrong side of the law if he was in an episode of Doctor Who.
The actor, who admits he was “one of those children who’d hide when Doctor Who started”, would love to get his teeth into a nasty role in the beloved Sci-fi series.

“I’d like to do it”, Allam says in this week’s edition of Radio Times. “Playing a villain would be great.”
Perhaps D.I could be short for Dalek Intelligence, eh?

For now he’ll have to content himself with chasing down the criminals on this planet with DC Endeavour Morse, but never say never. Who knows when a Tardis might pop up on the streets of 60s Oxford?

Stranger things have happened in the Whoniverse.

The final rating includes those who watched the programme within one week of transmission. It is an increase of nearly 2 million on the initially reported figure.

A substantial timeshift was also achieved by the BBC’s highest rated programme, Mrs Brown’s Boys, which finished with 9.49 million watching. Other BBC programmes doing well included Call the Midwife with 9.3 million, Stick Man with 9.28 million, and Strictly Come Dancing with 8.54 million. The Boxing Day showing of the Agatha Christie mystery And Then There Were None also scored highly with 8.61 million viewers.
