DOCTOR WHO SERIES 9: EPISODE TWO SYNOPSIS TEASES A “TERRIFYING DALEK CITY”

DOCTOR WHO SERIES 9: EPISODE TWO SYNOPSIS TEASES A “TERRIFYING DALEK CITY”

“With his greatest temptation before him, can the Doctor resist?”

When Doctor Who returns for a new series later this month, so will his oldest and deadliest enemies the Daleks…
Last week we got a rather vague – if intriguing – synopsis for the first half of the opening two-parter, The Magician’s Apprentice / The Witch’s Familiar…
“Where is the Doctor? When the skies of Earth are frozen by a mysterious alien force, Clara needs her friend. But where is the Doctor, and what is he hiding from? As past deeds come back to haunt him, old enemies will come face-to-face, and for the Doctor and Clara survival seems impossible…”

…and now, with the episode two description, we know for sure who that ‘old enemy’ is…
“Trapped and alone in a terrifying Dalek city, the Doctor is at the heart of an evil Empire; no sonic, no Tardis, nobody to help. With his greatest temptation before him, can the Doctor resist? And will there be mercy?”

A ‘terrifying Dalek city’, eh? Well, what planet might that be located on, we wonder…?
Wherever it is, it sounds like the Doctor has his work cut out for him. Why is he alone? What’s happened to Clara and Missy? Where’s the Tardis? Has his sonic screwdriver been destroyed? And just what is the Doctor’s greatest temptation? Could this mean a Genesis of the Daleks-style ethical dilemma, where he’s given a choice to destroy the Daleks?
And where does this Witch’s Familiar fit in, anyway?

Doctor Who series nine returns to BBC1 on 19th September, while The Witch’s Familiar airs the following week on 26th September.

DOCTOR WHO’S JENNA COLEMAN HAS TAKEN A BRAVE STEP IN THE HIT SHOW’S NEW SERIES

DOCTOR WHO’S JENNA COLEMAN HAS TAKEN A BRAVE STEP IN THE HIT SHOW’S NEW SERIES

Jenna, who plays Clara Oswald, has done a lot of her own stunts for the new series.

Jenna, 29, who plays Clara Oswald, said: “I’ve done a lot of hanging upside down this series – upside down on a cliff in Tenerife was new, but surprising, it looks so easy but it’s not at all..
“It was tricky. I also had a scene where I was hanging outside of the Tardis, so it seems to be one of my specialities this series.”
The new series starts on September 19, on BBC1, and includes an episode with just one character – Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.
Show boss Steven Moffat explained: “We’re pushing the boundaries once again with the most experimental episode Doctor Who has ever made.

“I’ve written a one hander for the Doctor, I can’t tell you too much about this, but it’s certainly unique and a big first for the show.”
The opening episode features Capaldi as Doctor Who fighting with the Daleks.
Capaldi said: “I think we had about 20 Daleks in the studio so that was very exciting.
“Once you had them all moving, it was very funny watching them directing them: ‘you’re getting upset at this moment, have a look at your friends’ – and they’d look at their friends and then she’d say – ‘you need to look nervous now’ – and they’d actually be able to convey nervousness – it was actually very, very clever.
“It was like being in a Dalek theme park, with a free ticket, so that was fun.”

DOCTOR WHO FINDS NEW FOES AT THE BANK WHEN PETER CAPALDI’S SIGNATURE SPEEDS UP THROUGH TIME

DOCTOR WHO FINDS NEW FOES AT THE BANK WHEN PETER CAPALDI’S SIGNATURE SPEEDS UP THROUGH TIME

The actor says his autograph has changed as he writes faster for waiting fans – and he also has some stirring words in support of the BBC.

Peter Capaldi got into bother with his bank over his new quicker signature.
The Doctor Who star has speeded up his writing so he can give more fans autographs.
But his bank reckoned it was a forgery when officials spotted it on a cheque.
The star, 57, said: “The signature has changed so much this year. I do a faster one now.
“The bank sent the cheque back: ‘This is not you!’
Talking in The Big Issue magazine, Capaldi also spoke out passionately in defence of the BBC and also criticised the lack of help to get working class kids through university.
Capaldi said: “I absolutely love the BBC, I think it is a fabulous organisation. It is not perfect, but it has given us so much more than it has taken.

“The idea that we would cash it in, in order to have broadcasting services that are run for profit like you see on your cable stations? No!
“I think it is vital to have a public service broadcasting service of this scale. The opportunities it brings to the country are immense.
“Do people think all these other television services are these great shakes, because they are simply not.
“Nobody else does what the BBC does. And it is an ethos, a way of thinking, a way of conducting themselves and viewing the world that is not about profit – when did that become bad news? When did that become uncool?

“Oh, I guess, yeah, about 1982 that started. And it has grown. And that is wrong. The world needs a more complex response than the response of businessmen.”
Capaldi was speaking ahead of the new series of Doctor Who, which starts on BBC1 on September 19.
The opening episode features Capaldi’s Time Lord fighting old foes the Daleks.
Capaldi said: “I think we had about 20 Daleks in the studio so that was very exciting.
“Once you had them all moving, it was very funny watching them directing them: ‘you’re getting upset at this moment, have a look at your friends’ – and they’d look at their friends and then she’d say – ‘you need to look nervous now’.
“And they’d actually be able to convey nervousness – it was actually very, very clever.
“It was like being in a Dalek theme park, with a free ticket, so that was fun.”

PETER CAPALDI WILL GO SOLO IN THE SHOW’S MOST EXPERIMENTAL EPISODE EVER

PETER CAPALDI WILL GO SOLO IN THE SHOW’S MOST EXPERIMENTAL EPISODE EVER

Doctor Who will tackle what’s being billed as its “most experimental episode” ever as part of the new series.
Confirming recent rumours, Steven Moffat has announced that Peter Capaldi will star in a special ‘one hander’ episode – featuring no characters other than the Doctor.

But don’t blame recent BBC budget cuts – it’s actually a bold intentional move by the show’s creators.
“We always like a new challenge on the show,” Moffat said. “I can’t tell you too much about this, but it’s certainly unique and a big first for the show!”

Moffat, head writer and executive producer on the series, also hinted that the new 12-part series will include “urban thrillers, underwater ghost stories [and] journeys that take us from Vikings to the end of time”.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One on Saturday, September 19 – with Jenna Coleman (Clara) returning alongside Capaldi.
Guest stars for the series include Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, actor and comic Rufus Hound and Inside No. 9’s Reece Shearsmith, while Michelle Gomez will also reprise her role as Missy.

DOCTOR WHO WILL BATTLE DALEKS FROM ACROSS THE DECADES IN SERIES 9

DOCTOR WHO WILL BATTLE DALEKS FROM ACROSS THE DECADES IN SERIES 9

No matter which type of Dalek is your favourite, you should be satisfied by Doctor Who series 9’s two-part premiere.

‘The Magician’s Apprentice’ and ‘The Witch’s Familiar’ will see the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) battle Daleks from across the decades.

“The opening episode of the new series is fabulous,” Capaldi promised. “The story is going to take us across the Universe in to all types of dark, terrifying and funny places.

“It’s a particularly epic one to start, with lots of old favourites, Missy and the Daleks are returning – and particularly for those who are nostalgic with the Daleks of the ’60s, there are some special surprises in store.”

Capaldi – who is, lest we forget, a big fan of classic Doctor Who – admitted that he was excited to act alongside the old-school models.

“I don’t have a particular favourite, but I do like to see the little old ones,” he said. “They’re very sweet as they’re quite small – but actually they’re still strangely brutal, nasty little pieces of work.

“You get a whole group of them together in the opening episode. I think we had about 20 of them in the studio so that was very exciting.”

Tune in to BBC One on Saturday, September 19 for some Dalek action, when Doctor Who returns with ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’.

DOCTOR WHO WILL AMP UP THE FUN IN SERIES 9: “YOU’LL BE GRINNING A LOT MORE”

DOCTOR WHO WILL AMP UP THE FUN IN SERIES 9: “YOU’LL BE GRINNING A LOT MORE”

Expect more laughs alongside the scares in the new series of Doctor Who.
Steven Moffat has promised that fans will be “grinning a lot more” this year – and so will the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman).

“They’ve been through the angst, the Doctor has been through his fear of not being a good man, and Clara has been through her fear that this might not be the Doctor,” Moffat said.

“They’re on equal footing with a new dynamic between them and are relishing the Universe. They’re linking hands and running towards a brand new world of epic adventure on a cinematic scale. They are clearly heroes and loving every minute!”

Head writer Moffat described the new 12-part run as “big, mad and exciting”, adding: “You’ll be grinning a lot more, there’s more comedy mixed in with some of the darkest stuff we’ve done – the Doctor’s first big entrance kind of sets the tone.

He also elaborated on the decision to reintroduce two-parters with a vengeance, promising “bigger stories” and “massive cliffhangers”.
“45 minutes has served us incredibly well,” he said. “But it’s time to change it up a bit, change the rhythm.

“It’s not just about being longer, sometimes it’s about going deeper. And you won’t always be quite sure whether you’re watching a two-parter or not – [or] how much longer the jeopardy will last. We’re aiming to be unpredictable.”

Doctor Who will return to BBC One on Saturday, September 19, with premiere episode ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’

BBC ONE TRAILER – SNEAK PEEK OF EPISODE 1, SERIES 9

BBC ONE TRAILER – SNEAK PEEK OF EPISODE 1, SERIES 9

‘Where is the Doctor? Doctor Who returns Saturday 19 September.

It’s only 19 seconds long, but the trailer for the first episode of series nine, The Magician’s Apprentice, raises plenty of questions – and opens with some seriously creepy hands.
No, we’re not talking about the Doctor’s gesticulating this time. Just what are those mud-slick hands with eyeballs embedded in their palms? Who is that mysterious boy screaming “help me”? And for that matter, who is the snarling, hooded chap who demands to know the Doctor’s whereabouts (and not because he wants to shake his hand, we’re guessing)?
What we do know is that the skies of Earth have been frozen by a mysterious alien force, but the Doctor is nowhere to be found…
