DOCTOR WHO: SYLVESTER & THE SYCORAX!

DOCTOR WHO: SYLVESTER & THE SYCORAX!

Casting details for the third story of Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters have been revealed!

Coming in 2016, Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters is a box set of four new stories pitting the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors against creatures from the New Series of Doctor Who.

Harvest of the Sycorax by James Goss sees Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor battling the Sycorax, the tribal aliens who first appeared in Russell T Davies’ The Christmas Invasion. The Voodoo Warriors will be led by Giles Watling (Bread, Crossroads, ‘Allo ‘Allo) as they attack a deep-space medical facility.
‘The Sycorax are a brilliant creation by Russell T Davies,’ says producer David Richardson. ‘Did they only have one outing on TV? It seems like many more because they come with such a rich backstory, which James has used to great effect in this story.’
‘Clever cattle Big Finish,’ says a Sycorax-obsessed James. ‘I totally jumped to land this boxset. The Sycorax are a precious creation. Sylvester McCoy, oh he’s a fleet and clever actor. Big Finish jak, Big Finish telpo, Big Finish faa!’
Playing hostages in the Sycorax’s scheme are Jonathan Firth (Wuthering Heights, An Idea Husband, Middlemarch) as Cadwallader, Nisha Nayar (Doctor Who: Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways, Doctor Who: Paradise Towers, The Buddha of Suburbia, The Story of Tracy Beaker) as Zanzibar and Rebecca Callard (The Miracle Maker, The Borrowers, Ordinary Lives) as Shadrak. The story has been directed by regular Big Finish contributor Barnaby Edwards.
‘I think Harvest of the Sycorax is one of Sylvester’s strongest performances’ says Barnaby,  ‘He’s funny, fast and, when required to be, furious. The Seventh Doctor and the Sycorax make for thrilling adversaries. And the supporting cast are wonderful!’
Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters will be released in 2016, and will include three further stories featuring the Weeping Angels, Judoon and Sontarans. You can pre-order your copy today.

Cast of Doctor Who, Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi, plus writer Steven Moffat, (second left behind chair) and executive producer Brian Minchin, (left behind chair), have their picture taken with the whole cinema audience at Cineworld in Cardiff.

Doctor Who fans were treated to not one, but two episodes of Doctor Who series nine tonight unlike Scottish and English fans who only got to see one.

Writer Steven Moffat said “we saved episode two for the Welsh.”

The sucking up to the audience worked wonderfully as Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Moffat, along with executive producer Brian Minchin, received a deserved warm welcome from the crowd gathered at Cineworld in the Welsh capital.

After watching the two exciting episodes, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, the panel took part in a generous-spirited Q&A session which took in topics such as their favourite episodes, would they do a musical episode and a discussion about guitars with Peter Capaldi.

A big new wave and punk fan, Capaldi also revealed that he’d love to have musical heroes David Bowie and Keith Richards guest star in the series.

Talking about a guitar he uses in the first episode, he said: “It was a great day when I got to go and pick the Doctor’s guitar on Denmark Street. At first I thought he should play a Strat, but that looked like I was having a mid-life crisis.
“In the end I picked a guitar that looked like one someone who had never picked up a guitar might play!”

When asked specifically about the brand new Christmas episode, Moffat teased: “All the specific detail of the Christmas episode will be known…..at the end of Christmas Day!”

At the end of the Q&A everyone took part in this massive group photo – can you spot yourself?

PETER CAPALDI: I WANT DAVID BOWIE AS A DOCTOR WHO GUEST STAR

PETER CAPALDI: I WANT DAVID BOWIE AS A DOCTOR WHO GUEST STAR

The actor also revealed that he was very particular about which guitar the Doctor would play in series nine…

Over the years Doctor Who has had many high-profile guest stars, some of whom have been musicians (including Katherine Jenkins and Foxes in recent years) – but there’s one music grandee who Peter Capaldi thinks has been missing out.

“I think we should have David Bowie,” the actor told the crowd at a screening for episode one and two of the upcoming series. “I think he would be a very good one.”
OK, it sounds a little crazy – but now we’ve thought about it, it’s almost too perfect. Who better to explore space and time with the Doctor than Ziggy Stardust, the composer of Space Oddity? A man who once released an album that could almost be a Doctor Who episode premise in itself – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars – and starred as an alien in sci-fi movie classic The Man Who Fell to Earth. If someone’s not already pitching that to Steven Moffat for series ten, we will.

Still, if Bowie did appear on the series he might have a bit of a rivalry on the music front from the Doctor himself. In the series nine trailer the Doc rocks a cool guitar (which former rocker Peter Capaldi plays himself), and the actor spoke of his joy in finally putting his musical talents to use.
“I was really delighted to open the script and find the Doctor playing guitar,” he said. “I think I’d sort of half mentioned it in joking, but I was really delighted that these guys went for it as an idea.”

“We had a great day when I went to pick the Doctor’s guitar,” he reminisced. “We went to Denmark street and went to various vintage guitar shops, looking for Doctor Who’s guitar. And I first I thought it should be like a Stratocaster or a Telecaster, one of those old classic guitars, but they all started to look like I was having a midlife crisis.”

“We ended up with a guitar that looked like a Fender Stratocaster that had been described to someone who had never seen one.”
He added: “That [joke] is hilarious, if you’re into guitars.”
We’re calling it – a Capaldi/Bowie duet is on the cards. Ground control to Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart…

Doctor Who series 9 begins on Saturday 19th September on BBC1 at 7:40pm

STEVEN MOFFAT: I PREFER WATCHING CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO IN MY SPARE TIME

STEVEN MOFFAT: I PREFER WATCHING CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO IN MY SPARE TIME

Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen in “The Ark In Space” (1975)

Forget about Tennant, Smith and Capaldi – the writer would rather relax with McCoy, Baker et al.

He might be at the head of the revived series, but Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat has revealed that when it comes down to it he prefers to watch older episodes from the 60s, 70s and 80s – at least when it comes to relaxation.

“The modern show feels – I love it to bits, it’s one of my favourite things in the world,” he said last night at a special screening for episodes one and two of Doctor Who series nine.
“But if I’m watching Doctor Who recreationally, I’ll be watching the old series. Because I don’t feel that I’m part of it, in a way.”

It makes sense, we suppose – the mystique of the Doctor’s world is probably ruined a little bit when you spend hours watching footage of the Doctor talking to green screens, with every plot twist already spoiled by dint of them coming from your own head. But which episodes would he recommend to any Doctor Who fans hoping to join him in his classic appreciation?
“What would I watch from the old series? I’m just giving you your reading list now,” Moffat said. “Ark from Space is rather wonderful.”

He concluded: “I think if people don’t understand how good latter-day Who was, they should all go home and watch Remembrance of the Daleks with Sylvester McCoy.”
Of course, fellow Whovian Peter Capaldi wasn’t to be outdone, also chiming in with his favourite classic episode.

“I’ve got a sneaking affection for The Day of the Daleks,” he told the crowd. Though considering how similar his new series nine outfit is to Jon Pertwee’s in that episode, perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised. Tell us, when does in-show homage turn into Third Doctor cosplay?

MICHELLE GOMEZ AND JENNA COLEMAN ON TEAMING UP TO SAVE THE DOCTOR IN DOCTOR WHO SERIES 9

MICHELLE GOMEZ AND JENNA COLEMAN ON TEAMING UP TO SAVE THE DOCTOR IN DOCTOR WHO SERIES 9

“There is something not quite right about it that makes for slightly unnerving viewing. Missy gets bored very easily…”

The last time they saw each other, Missy had resurrected Clara’s late boyfriend as a Cyberman, before condemning him to a second, gruesome death. Not the greatest start to a friendship, but that won’t stop the pair from teaming up in series nine opener The Magician’s Apprentice. Best. Buddy movie. Ever.
The unlikely alliance, of course, is born out of necessity: to save the Doctor, who, according to Jenna Coleman, is in so much peril that, “the only thing to do is to put differences aside and work together.”

As you can imagine, Missy and Clara do not get on. Yet, Coleman says, their dynamic isn’t totally antagonistic.
“In a way, Clara’s quite fascinated by Missy, but disgusted at the same time. That’s partly to do with how Michelle Gomez plays her, she’s so magnetic that you can’t help but like her, even though you’re supposed to hate her. It’s one of the really clever things she does. Clara and Missy actually end up getting on, but remembering they don’t like each other again.”
Coleman’s thoughts on the pairing chime with Michelle Gomez’s, who made her first proper debut at the gender-swapped Master in last year’s series eight finale Dark Water / Death in Heaven.

“Our relationship shifts greatly from where we left off in the last series,” Gomez told the BBC. “Dare I say there might be a hint of respect there? Perhaps not quite respect. More a healthy dose of circumspect, from both I guess.

“The dynamic takes on a whole new shape and not one I had imagined. There is something not quite right about it that makes for slightly unnerving viewing. Missy gets bored very easily. You can imagine her and the Doctor in the classroom. Missy using her intellect even then to cause mischief and disrupt.”

Coleman adds that Clara also begins to learn about the complexity of the Doctor and the Master’s relationship, which runs far deeper than them simply being enemies.
“Having two females that are very close to the Doctor is interesting for Clara to witness, because the Doctor and Missy are enemies, but they are also very ancient friends. They have a past and history that they cannot even touch upon, or even understand how you can like or be in love with somebody that has repeatedly tried to kill you throughout time and space.

“I also think it’s interesting for Clara to operate under a female Time Lady, she’s so used to running with the Doctor that to be with a Time Lady is quite a new experience for her. Somebody who is so maniacal is quite fun. You think you’re safe and within 30 seconds you’re literally being pushed down a cliff.”

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 with The Magician’s Apprentice on 19th September.

PLAYING THE DOCTOR HAS HURT MY KNEES SAYS PETER CAPALDI

PLAYING THE DOCTOR HAS HURT MY KNEES SAYS PETER CAPALDI

Time Lord says that who the Doctor is still remains a mystery to him – but he says that getting the “alien-ness” of the role is one of his biggest acting challenges.

Saving the universe has taken its toll on the Doctor – Peter Capaldi has admitted that the rigours of the role have hurt his knees.
Capaldi, who returns to the role when Doctor Who airs on BBC1 next Saturday, has revealed that he has developed the same “knee complaint” shared by his predecessor Matt Smith which he believes could be down to the physical challenges of playing the iconic role.

“It’s something to do with running down corridors and turning round very quickly to deliver lines,” the actor says.

Capaldi also admits that he doesn’t believe he has yet fully mastered playing the part which he says is one of the greatest acting challenges he has ever faced.
“I don’t feel I’ve nailed it yet – from an acting point of view, I mean,” he told today’s Daily Telegraph. “I don’t yet feel that I know how to do this. Quite who the Doctor is remains mysterious to me – which is of course as it should be – but one of the biggest challenges that I’ve found, and am finding, is that you have to sort of be able to spin on a penny.

“You have to be able to go from pantomime to tragedy, from domestic to epic, within a single scene.
“What I wanted to do, I suppose, was remind people of the alien-ness of the Doctor. Doctor Who isn’t a human being, you see. He’s a creature of the cosmos. His social skills aren’t great. He doesn’t care very much if people like or dislike him, because people aren’t his thing, you know?”

However Capaldi admits that he is loving playing the part and is determined to enjoy every minute.
“It might just be my Scottish melancholia, but the very first day I found out I’d got the job, I started to feel sad that one day I would not have it; that there would come a day, in the not too distant future, that I wouldn’t be Doctor Who any more. And that is why I try really hard to get as much out of it as possible.
“Because one day I’ll just be an overweight has-been, trying to get a meeting with Jenna Coleman and being ejected from a Doctor Who Convention in Bolton for being drunk and disorderly. I mean, this is surely my high point, isn’t it?’”

STEVEN MOFFAT TALKS ON POSSIBLE LIVE AND MUSICAL EPISODES OF DOCTOR WHO

STEVEN MOFFAT TALKS ON POSSIBLE LIVE AND MUSICAL EPISODES OF DOCTOR WHO

It might not be in the upcoming season 9, but we could soon see the Doctor bursting into song around the TARDIS console.

It’s after Steven Moffat revealed he wouldn’t be against writing a musical episode of Doctor Who a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer (via Radio Times)

When asked about the possibility, Moffat said: “Who knows – anything could happen, I guess. Maybe!”
“It’s a hard one. A musical Doctor Who. It’s like saying, ‘do you know what this show isn’t – it’s just not camp enough.’ Really?”

“Anything is possible, that’s the extraordinary thing about Doctor Who. I’ve just never heard an idea for [a musical episode], or had an idea for one, that remotely worked.”

When questioned if the show could follow in the footsteps of live episodes of EastEnders and Coronation Street, Moffat said a live Doctor Who production would be too tricky to put together – citing the intensive post-production that is required on episodes.

He said: “I wouldn’t do it, I’ve gotta be honest – I’d run like hell from that, because the thing you don’t know about Doctor Who is the state it’s in when we sign it off.

“It’s… wow. The postproduction on Doctor Who – it’s like a whole other show. All these geniuses come in and make it into this completely real world.”

He added: “So I wouldn’t like personally, for me, a live episode. In the case of Doctor Who, we would be denied the creative input of some of the greatest postproduction crew on the planet. Why the hell would I wanna lose those guys?”

DOCTOR WHO SERIES 9 THE SERIES RETURNS WITH 12 EPISODES AND A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

DOCTOR WHO SERIES 9 THE SERIES RETURNS WITH 12 EPISODES AND A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, gives an insight in to what to expect from the ninth series of Doctor Who, returning to BBC One on Saturday 19 September.

Doctor Who is back, how has the dynamic of the series changed since series 8?

Peter Capaldi returns with his second series as the Doctor – it’s the glory years of the Doctor and Clara. They’ve been through the angst, the Doctor has been through his fear of not being a good man, and Clara has been through her fear that this might not be the Doctor. They’re on equal footing with a new dynamic between them and are relishing the Universe. They’re linking hands and running towards a brand new world of epic adventure on a cinematic scale. They are clearly heroes and loving every minute!

How is the series different from last year?
It’s a big, mad and exciting series. You’ll be grinning a lot more and there’s more comedy mixed in with some of the darkest stuff we’ve done – the Doctor’s first big entrance sets the tone.

Why did you decide to reintroduce two-parters?
We’re doing bigger stories and two-parters allow you all those massive cliff hangers. Forty five minutes has served us incredibly well, but it’s time to change it up a bit, change the rhythm. It’s not just about being longer, sometimes it’s about going deeper. And you won’t always be quite sure whether you’re watching a two-parter or not – how much longer the jeopardy will last. We’re aiming to be unpredictable.

Tell us about the guest cast.
We have a vast array of guest cast this year that means we can build on the depth of stories and develop intrigue and backstories even further. We have the magnificent, insane and comedic Missy returning; young outstanding Maisie Williams taking up a new role, as her character challenges the Doctor in unexpected ways; and of course Osgood is brought back from the dead. The Doctor might be in for a surprise with her, this time he might not be able to trust his number one fan.

Did you have any challenges writing for the series?
We always like a new challenge on the show: bringing adventures set on dangerous alien planets; urban thrillers; underwater ghost stories; journeys that take us from Vikings to the end of time itself. We’re pushing the boundaries once again with the most experimental episode Doctor Who has ever made. I’ve written a one-hander for the Doctor, I can’t tell you too much about this, but it’s certainly unique and a big first for the show!
