DOCTOR WHO: A LOOK AHEAD AT SEASON 9 – CLARA OSWALD
Jenna Coleman, Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Ingrid Oliver discuss the new season!
Jenna Coleman, Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Ingrid Oliver discuss the new season!
The man behind some of the BBC’s biggest shows, including Sherlock and Doctor Who, has asked people to imagine what the world would be like without the “insane variety” of the BBC.
TV writer Steven Moffat again voiced his support for the corporation and pointed towards Doctor Who, The Great British Bake Off and “everything David Attenborough’s ever done” as examples of how varied BBC shows are.
He told an audience at the Edinburgh International Television Festival: “There is no other broadcaster so madly varied and so genuinely mad. Can you imagine what the world would be like without all of that insane variety?”
He added: “I think a very, very small number of people think the BBC is a bad idea, and a huge number of people think the BBC is a wonderful idea.
“Sadly, the small number of people are all in Government.”
He prompted laughter from the crowd with that last comment and added that it was “slightly unbalanced”.
The acclaimed Doctor Who writer said: “Let’s be clear, I think it’s fair to say there is only one broadcaster in the whole world that would come up with and transmit it, as a good idea, Doctor Who.”
Moffat has previously hit out at the Government’s plans for the corporation.
He said the BBC was “a beacon of quality” and described the recent green paper as “wretched” and “wrong”.
The future of the BBC, its funding, and what it should and should not be doing was much discussed during the festival.
Culture Secretary John Whittingdale rubbished the idea that the corporation is to be dismantled.
“I’ve never suggested dismantling the BBC,” he told the festival crowd.
Director of strategy and digital at the BBC, James Purnell, said the corporation welcomed what Mr Whittingdale said, adding: “I think he’s changed the mood around the debate, very much so.”
But Chris Bryant, shadow secretary of state for culture, said during a Question Time session at the festival: “John has been appointed specifically to be the nice guy who wanders around conferences and says ‘look, it’s not going to be so bad, it’s all going to be fine’. And James Purnell’s bought it. Daft. Ludicrous.”
Mr Bryant also accused BBC Director-General Tony Hall of being a “coward” for not challenging Mr Whittingdale.
The Culture Secretary had sparked concern among some supporters of the BBC after saying that a review of its royal charter would look at whether the broadcaster should continue to be “all things to all people” or have a more “precisely targeted” mission.
Meanwhile, writer and director Armando Iannucci said the BBC should look at the possibility of expanding.
He launched a passionate defence of the corporation in his James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture and said British television needs support amid political attacks.
The satirist warned that tampering with the BBC would be “madness”, and that politicians – with no expertise in the area – have got the British television industry “completely wrong”.
He also suggested the BBC could take pressure off the licence fee by selling shows more aggressively abroad.
Moffat hailed Iannucci’s speech as “epic” and said he would “strongly recommend” that people read it.
In a separate session, former Crimewatch presenter Nick Ross said the BBC is “killing itself”.
He said the corporation needs to supplement the licence fee with other income.
Ross said he sees an organisation clinging to a system where it will have to “fight” to survive every year or every 10 years, and will only get “more and more diminished”.
Also at the festival, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanded that Scotland must get a dedicated BBC television channel to counter the often “ill-informed” coverage of London-based journalists who have “totally failed” to cover constitutional change.
As a minimum, Ms Sturgeon called for BBC editors based within Scotland to have greater ability to influence UK reporting, a specific Scottish site for iPlayer programmes, Scottish Parliament oversight for the BBC in Scotland, greater use of Scottish opt-outs, and more powers for the BBC commissioners based in Scotland, during her Alternative MacTaggart lecture.

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat has joked he would come out top in an epic knowledge battle with Peter Capaldi.
The show’s lead writer and executive producer insisted he wasn’t phased by the current Doctor’s extensive knowledge of the hit show.
He was asked at the Edinburgh International Television Festival if he was daunted by having to work closely with Capaldi – someone whose knowledge of the show and love of it could possibly exceed his own.
Moffat replied: “His love, we can compete on that, just let it be understood. But in a face-off, in a head-to-head, he’s nowhere bloody close.”

Capaldi said: “Soaring through all of time and space, series nine sees the Doctor throw himself into life with a new hunger for adventure.
“The Cosmos is there for the taking, thrilling, epic and enticing, and his to play in.
“But he’s almost reckless in his abandon. It’s almost like he’s running from something, something that if it ever catches him will turn his life upside down.”
Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on September 19.

The Gallifreyan Newsroom today has recieved information that fifth Doctor, Peter Davison is to write his autobiography which is currently titled The Fifth(ish) Doctor and will be published in April 2016. The book will feature a foreword by his son-in-law and former Doctor, David Tennant.
Davison is only the third Doctor actor to write an autobiography. Jon Pertwee wrote two autobiographies; 1984’s Moon Boots and Dinner Suits (republished in 2013) and I am the Doctor in 1996, the year of his death. Tom Baker came out with Who on Earth is Tom Baker? in 1997, though he didn’t mention much of Doctor Who. While not autobiographies, Colin Baker released two books; Look Who’s Talking (2010) and Second Thoughts (2011) which were compilations of the columns he wrote for Bucks Free Press.
‘Peter? It’s John Nathan Turner here. How would you like to be the next Doctor Who…’
After receiving this life-changing phone call in March 1980, actor Peter Davison would go on play the Doctor in the hit BBC series from 1981–84, fighting Daleks, Cybermen and the Master. Now, for the first time, Davison reveals what it was really like to take on this role of a lifetime.
Davison also talks exclusively about this childhood and personal life, as well as describing his work on shows such as All Creatures Great and Small, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Miranda, Sherlock and Law and Order UK.

Ingrid Oliver is a Doctor Who fangirl on and off screen, here we talk to her about.
There’s one face we’re very happy to see back in Doctor Who – Osgood.
Actress Ingrid Oliver has revealed her shock at her popular character’s return after Doctor Who’s showrunner, Steven Moffat, said Osgood was a definite goner after being killed off by Missy (Michelle Gomez) at the end of series eight.
Oliver told WalesOnline while on location near Newport: “I was surprised after I read an interview with Steven where he said ‘no, she’s dead, she’s not coming back’. I thought ‘oh God’ because secretly I had hoped that I might (return).
“Then I got a phone call and I am back.”
Find out everything you need to know about Doctor Who!
The last time we saw Osgood as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart’s assistant was with the Twelfth Doctor during an invasion of Earth by an army of Cybermen led by a new, female incarnation of the Master.
This time she’s back in action and comes face-to-face with the shape-shifting extra-terrestrial Zygons, as they also return for the new series.
With Osgood being a Doctor Who super-fan, how does comedian Oliver cope with a brand new fanbase for her character?
“It’s bizarre and brilliant,” she said.
“I got sent a YouTube clip by a friend of fans reacting to them watching the episode. There was a little kid watching it and the bit where Osgood got killed he got really upset and was saying ‘no, no, no’ and he was really angry for quite a while. I was laughing at it thinking it was extraordinary.
“In the grand scheme of things I was not in it for that long so it was lovely that people cared, it was really sweet.”
But it’s the dressing up as her lab assistant-esque character that really intrigues her.
She added: “I got sent a picture of 20 Osgoods and it was absolutely bizarre. One of them was a 60-year-old man, cosplaying Osgood and I thought ‘well, that’s brilliant there is clearly mass appeal for 60-year-old men that want to be a girl scientist!’ It’s a good outfit.
“If I was cosplaying I think I’d go for that. A lab coat is very forgiving.”
And talk of Osgood being a companion is never far away when Oliver is talking Doctor Who – but would she take over the position if anything happened to Clara?
She says diplomatically: “Out of respect to the incumbent companion I would not answer a hypothetical question like that.”
But she adds that Osgood would definitely be a good companion.
“Yeah, she worships the man, so I am sure she would follow him anywhere.”
Doctor Who series nine starts on BBC One on September 19.
Here is a list of the ten titles for re-release on Time Travel TV in September. Including the very first independent DOCTOR WHO spin-off drama WARTIME.This new release has been re-mastered from the original rushes and has a digitised stereo mix from composter MARK AYRES! There’s also a stack of new special features.
The DVD will also feature a reversible inlay – with both the new cover artwork (below) and the original 1988 version. |
