BBC IPLAYER ‘WATCHED BY MORE THAN 60M OUTSIDE THE UK FOR FREE’

BBC IPLAYER ‘WATCHED BY MORE THAN 60M OUTSIDE THE UK FOR FREE’

More than 60 million people are watching the BBC iPlayer for free outside of the UK by masking their location, according to a new report.

Analysts estimate 65 million people regularly access the BBC catch-up TV service using virtual private networks (VPNs) or proxy servers.

In China alone that figure is thought to be around 38.5 million.

The iPlayer is meant for UK TV viewers only and is funded by the licence fee. A global iPlayer was closed last month.

The report from GlobalWebIndex said that despite VPNs being thought of as “fairly niche tools which are the preserve of the tech-savviest individuals”, around 25% of internet users worldwide now use them, primarily to access better entertainment content.

The research company surveyed more than 45,000 internet users across 34 countries, including China, the US, France, Germany, Ireland, India and Brazil.

It found that while the iPlayer is “geo-restricted to be viewable only by people resident in the country”, the BBC service does in fact have “a huge global audience”.

‘Clear potential’

“The implications for iPlayer are stark,” said Jason Mander, head of trends at GlobalWebIndex, writing in the report.

“However, rather than seeing this as a threat, there’s much good news here for the BBC.”

The report highlighted that 75% of the 65 million already pay for subscription services like Netflix or Hulu, so there was “clear potential” for the BBC to create “new revenue streams”.

“If even a relatively small proportion users could be converted into paid users, the additional revenue it could create for the BBC would be significant.”

A BBC spokesman said: “BBC iPlayer, and the content on it, is paid for by UK licence fee payers to watch and download in the UK and the terms of use reflect that.

“We do not comment on individual cases regarding breaches of BBC iPlayer’s terms of use, but we take steps where appropriate to protect the intellectual property belonging to rights holders.”

A global iPlayer subscription service, which allowed viewers in Europe, Australia and Canada to watch programmes like Doctor Who, was shut down last month.

GlobalWebIndex also found the domestic iPlayer to be the most popular on-demand service in the UK by far – with 45% of internet users aged 16-64 accessing it in the past month, and just 4% being unaware of the service.

Netflix is the second most popular service, attracting 24% of web users.

The BBC’s most recent iPlayer figures revealed there were 222 million requests for TV programmes in May, with Peter Kay’s Car Share the most popular show.

The GlobalWebIndex figures would suggest that 29% of these requests may have come from TV viewers outside of the UK.

DOCTOR WHO: SONTAR-HA!

DOCTOR WHO: SONTAR-HA!

More casting news for Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters has been revealed!

Coming in 2016, Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters is a box set of four new stories pitting the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors against creatures from the New Series of Doctor Who.

The Sontaran Ordeal by Andrew Smith sees Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor do battle with his old enemies the Sontarans – but this time in a new and deadly form, ready for a War they must never take part in!

Leading the ranks of Sontar’s finest will be Dan Starkey as Jask. Dan is no stranger to these fan favourite monsters, thanks to his portrayal of Strax in the Television series, as well as the co-writer of the upcoming Doctor Who: Terror of the Sontarans.

‘I love the Sontarans,’ says producer David Richardson, ‘so I relished the opportunity to tell a story with the New Series batch of the clones, who are eager to become part of the Time War, while the Doctor desperately attempts to help the innocents caught up in its devastating effects.’

Joining Dan in battle will be his Sontaran Stratagem commanding officer Christopher Ryan (The Young Ones, Absolutely Fabulous) as General Stenk, alongside Sean Connolly (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Jupiter Moon, The Quiet One) as Ensign Stipe. Together, they’ll lead the forces of the Ninth Sontaran Battle Fleet to victory on the planet Drakkis. There, the Doctor will have to contend with Sand Serpents, Scavengers and the freedom-fighting paladin Sarana Teel – played by TV legend Josette Simon OBE (Blake’s 7, Cry Freedom, Red Lights).

‘It’s a tribute to the strength of Andrew’s script that we got such an impressive cast,’ says director Barnaby Edwards. ‘It was great to see Dan and Chris reunited. And Josette Simon and Paul McGann worked so well together they were asking for their own spinoff series!’

Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters will be released in 2016, and will include three further stories featuring the Weeping Angels, Sycorax and Judoon. You can pre-order your copy today.

STEVEN MOFFAT DEFENDS THE BBC: “IF WE ALLOW THE TORIES TO TURN IT OFF, I CAN’T SEE HOW WE’D GET IT BACK”

STEVEN MOFFAT DEFENDS THE BBC: “IF WE ALLOW THE TORIES TO TURN IT OFF, I CAN’T SEE HOW WE’D GET IT BACK”

“If we limit, damage or destroy the BBC, we have absolutely no idea how to turn it back on,” said the Sherlock and Doctor Who writer

Steven Moffat is the latest high profile figure to come out in defence of the BBC. The Sherlock co-creator and Doctor Who showrunner has described the Corporation as a “beacon” of broadcasting, and criticised the Conservative government’s “all wretched, all wrong” proposals for change.”If we limit it, or damage it, or destroy it, we have absolutely no idea how to turn it back on, because we don’t know how it happened in the first place,” he told The Stage.

“You could look at [the BBC’s] philosophy, you could look at the fact that somehow from the work of those early pioneers it became a beacon of quality – not just for Britain, but for the entire world. If we allow, basically, the Tories to turn off the people that are criticising them, which is what is happening, I can’t see how we’d get it back.”

He continued: “The inevitable, pathetic argument against this is that we’re all feathering our own nests because we’re all employed by the BBC, but they don’t pay that well.

“I could have made more money if I’d stayed with my Spielberg three-picture deal, and not done Doctor Who. And I assure you that if Satan rose from hell and killed the BBC, I could still find work.”

Moffat joins a number of big names in backing the BBC after the government published its green paper calling for a fundamental review of the size of the Corporation, what it does, the way it’s funded and its remit.

In a statement, the Beeb said the document would “appear to herald a much diminished, less popular BBC”. It’s been supported by the likes of David Attenborough,Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, JK Rowling and Cerys Matthews – the singer and 6 Music presenter who told the House of Lords earlier this week that without the BBC we would have a more unequal, ignorant – and fatter – society.

Steven Moffat is talking Doctor Who alongside Peter Capaldi at this year’s Radio Times Festival running from 24-27 September. Tickets are available here.

DOCTOR WHO STAR ALEX KINGSTON MARRIES

DOCTOR WHO STAR ALEX KINGSTON MARRIES

Alex Kingston has married her long-term partner Jonathan Stamp in a romantic Italian ceremony.

The 52-year-old actress, best known for her roles in sci-fi series Doctor Who and medical drama ER, walked down the aisle in a romantic ceremony held at the All Saints Anglican Church in Rome on Saturday.

Alex shunned bridal traditions for her third marriage, opting for a pastel green wedding dress with a voluminous skirt instead of a classic white gown.

The screen star and her TV producer Jonathan were grinning from ear-to-ear as they left the church after the ceremony, with a violinist serenading them as they made their way to the reception.

The happy couple were joined by a gaggle of bridesmaids, who included Alex’s 14-year-old daughter Salome, all wearing equally unconventional black prom dresses. The girls shielded themselves from the scorching afternoon sun under pretty parasols and wore giant red blooms in their hair.

Alex was the picture of happiness following the ceremony, hitching up her pale gown’s skirt as the wedding party made their way down the street, drawing curious stares from onlookers.

The British actress had beautiful pink roses woven in her curly locks and carried a white bouquet.  This marks Alex’s third marriage, having most notably been wed to Skyfall actor Ralph Fiennes.

Ralph and Alex, who met while mastering their acting craft at RADA, tied the knot after 10 years together in 1993, but went their separate ways in 1997.  The actress then wed German writer Florian Haertel, with whom she has 14-year-old daughter Salome.  Alex is based in Los Angeles and recently opened up to the Daily Mail about the difficulties of juggling work and motherhood.

‘I’m constantly racked with guilt about going away to work for long periods of time, but my daughter says, “Mummy, it’s completely fine”, she said.  ‘That makes me feel even more guilty – that she’s the one who is having to placate me. It’s not easy being away from her, but I think it’s probably always more heartbreaking for the mum.  ‘As parents, you make it work, because it’s what is best for your child.’

DOCTOR WHO: MEET THE VICTIMS OF THE WEEPING ANGELS!

The cast for the first story in our Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters boxset has been revealed!

Coming in 2016, Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters is a box set of four new stories pitting the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors against creatures from the New Series of Doctor Who.

Fallen Angels by Phil Mulryne sees Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor do battle with the most terrifying of creatures, the Weeping Angels – first introduced in 2007’sBlink.

‘The Weeping Angels have been voted one of the best Doctor Who monsters ever, and it’s easy to see why,’ says producer David Richardson. ‘They are utterly terrifying – and it’s so thrilling to be able to explore an Angels story with an earlier Doctor.’

Joining the Fifth Doctor for his new adventure is Sacha Dhawan (The History Boys, An Adventures in Space and Time) and Diane Morgan (Alpha Papa, Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe) as Joel and Gabby Finch; honeymooning tourists who enlist the Doctor’s help when they find themselves stranded in 16th Century Rome. ‘Phil’s ingenious script achieves the impossible and makes a famously visual monster work brilliantly on audio,’ says director Barnaby Edwards. ‘If you liked ‘Blink’, I think you’ll like this – it’s very much a chip off the old block!’

Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters will be released in 2016, and will include three further stories featuring the Judoon, Sycorax and Sontarans. You canpre-order your copy today.
