PETER CAPALDI SENDS FAN THE BEST BIRTHDAY GREETING EVER

PETER CAPALDI SENDS FAN THE BEST BIRTHDAY GREETING EVER

Now that’s what you call a birthday you’ll never forget!

WalesOnline’s Dave Prince was in Cardiff today following the cast and crew of Doctor Who as they filmed new scenes from series 9.

And because it was his pal’s birthday, he thought he’d shout across to the Doctor himself to see if he’d record a special birthday greeting to his pal Page Whatley.

Dave, from Pontypridd, said: “Peter Capaldi was signing autographs in between takes so I thought I’d ask him if he’d say something for Page.

“I said to him, ‘Could you please say happy birthday Page’ and that’s exactly what he did.”

JOIVAN WADE RETURNS AS RIGSY IN A NEW SERIES EPISODE WRITTEN BY SARAH DOLLARD

Filming has begun on episode 10 of the new series of Doctor Who and Joivan Wade, who played Rigsy in last year’s Flatline, is back! The episode is directed by Justin Molotnikov and written by Sarah Dollard whose previous credits include Being Human and the BBC’s acclaimed spy drama, The Game.

Sarah commented, ‘Getting to play in the Doctor Who toy box is a dream come true. It’s a total honour to contribute to a show that has brought me such joy as a fan. However, writing for Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman has presented a serious problem: some days I’ve been too excited to actually sit down and type!’

Watch an interview with Sarah Dollard about writing series 9, episode 10.

The episode sees the return of Joivan Wade as Rigsy, the young graffiti artist who helped save the world in Flatline. He’ll be reunited with the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) in this new adventure although how and why he finds himself mixed up with the time traveling heroes is currently under wraps!

The guest cast for the new series includes Maisie Williams, Michelle Gomez, Rebecca Front, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye and Jaye Griffiths.

The BBC Cymru Wales produced drama will return to BBC One this Autumn with further casting to be announced.

DOCTOR WHO STARS JEMMA REDGRAVE AND INGRID OLIVER GET THEIR OWN SPIN-OFF ADVENTURE

DOCTOR WHO STARS JEMMA REDGRAVE AND INGRID OLIVER GET THEIR OWN SPIN-OFF ADVENTURE

The actresses’ TV characters are being reunited for a four-hour audio adventure from Big Finish.

News just in from UNIT, aka the Unified Intelligence Taskforce. Its top operatives Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) are today teaming up for Big Finish Productions. It’s a first for the company that’s been making Doctor Who audio dramas since 1999.“We feel privileged to work within the universe of ‘new series’ Doctor Who for the first time,” says producer David Richardson, “and we’re thrilled that Jemma and Ingrid are on board.”

Until now, Big Finish has mined the Time Lord’s back catalogue, very successfully, with a roster of old Doctors (recently even the elusive Tom Baker) and former companions in brand-new adventures. They’re released on CD and as downloads, and are often later aired on Radio 4 Extra.

Jemma Redgrave and Ingrid Oliver are staples of the current TV series. As chief scientific officer Kate Stewart and scientist Osgood, they’re the modern face of Unit. The Time Lord’s Earthbound allies have been part of Doctor Who lore since way back in 1968, originally under the stewardship of the Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart.

BF executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery speaks from the heart: “Having worked with the greatly missed Nicholas Courtney [who died in 2011] and his magnificent portrayal of the Brigadier since the early days of Big Finish, it’s wonderful to see the return of Unit under the Brig’s daughter, Kate.”

Kate and Osgood were last seen on screen in the 2014 series finale, Death in Heaven. We know they’ve filmed episodes for series nine, coming to BBC1 this autumn. Of course, one big mystery remains unanswered – how will Steven Moffat reintroduce Osgood, who was cruelly vaporised by the Master/Missy?

In the mean time, Redgrave and Oliver go into the studio this week for Big Finish, recording Unit: Extinction. A four-hour adventure, written by Andrew Smith and Matt Fitton, it pits the duo against an old foe – the amorphous Nestene Consciousness and its deadly plastic Autons. The first adventure will be released as a CD box set and available to download in November, after Kate and Osgood’s return to Doctor Who on BBC1. There’ll be three other sets available at six-monthly intervals.

Big Finish’s Doctor Who audio dramas are available to buy from their website.

REBECCA FRONT TO GUEST STAR IN DOCTOR WHO

The BAFTA award-winning Rebecca Front joins the guest cast of the new series of Doctor Who.

It’s Rebecca’s first appearance in Doctor Who and she’ll be seen alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman who return later this year as the Doctor and Clara. She’s also joining Ingrid Oliver (Osgood) and Jemma Redgrave (Kate) who return in the two-parter written by Peter Harness.

Other members of the guest cast for series 9 include Maisie Williams, Michelle Gomez, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye and Jaye Griffiths.
