Doctor Who: Engines of War

Doctor Who: Engines of War

Synopsis

The Sunday Times bestseller

The Great Time War has raged for centuries, ravaging the universe. Scores of human colony planets are now overrun by Dalek occupation forces. A weary, angry Doctor leads a flotilla of Battle TARDISes against the Dalek stronghold but in the midst of the carnage, the Doctor’s TARDIS crashes to a planet below: Moldox.

As the Doctor is trapped in an apocalyptic landscape, Dalek patrols roam amongst the wreckage, rounding up the remaining civilians. But why haven’t the Daleks simply killed the humans?

Searching for answers the Doctor meets ‘Cinder’, a young Dalek hunter. Their struggles to discover the Dalek plan take them from the ruins of Moldox to the halls of Gallifrey, and set in motion a chain of events that will change everything. And everyone.

An epic novel of the Great Time War featuring the War Doctor as played by John Hurt.

Torchwood Comes To Big Finish

Torchwood Comes To Big Finish

Big Finish proudly presents John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood – an all new series of audio dramas based on the fantastic Doctor Who spin-off series.

Torchwood, the intrepid team of alien investigators, returns in a series of six audio productions, as part of a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide.

Once again, the Torchwood team will be led by the irrepressible Captain Jack, as played byJohn Barrowman – who broke the news of the series return on his radio show on Sunday evening.

Conceived as a spin-off from Doctor Who, Torchwood was created by Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, Cucumber, Banana, Queer as Folk) and made its debut on television in 2006. The top secret organisation Torchwood saved Cardiff (and often the world) from alien menaces and terrifying forces, trying to keep the city safe from the inter-dimensional rift that ran through it. In charge of Torchwood was Captain Jack, a man who has been called: “A companion to the Doctor, a rogue Time Agent, an immortal, a dangerous con-man, and very good at parties.” Captain Jack can’t be exterminated or trusted, and there’s just no stopping him.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellyn, which is released September 2015.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it’s finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish.”

“What’s great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive,” says producer James Goss. “Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it’s one of the few UK series to translate to America. It’s already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.”

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: “It’s fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many newTorchwood tales to be told and I can’t wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies have shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. OurTorchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”

Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later.

Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five instalments following monthly from January 2016.

You can pre-order all six release now, both individually, or as part of a subscription.

Tom Baker Back as The Doctor On BBC Radio 4 Extra

Tom Baker Back as The Doctor On BBC Radio 4 Extra

Tom Baker back as the Doctor on Radio 4 Extra

The Doctor Who veteran time travels again in six audio dramas that will air later this month

34 years after Tom Baker hung up his frockcoat, hat and stripy scarf, he’s back on the BBC as the Time Lord.
This time around, however, the fourth Doctor will have no need of accessories as he’ll only be heard. Baker has lent his voice to six stories that will air on Radio 4 Extra and promise to transport viewers back to 1970s Doctor Who.
The six episodes were recorded as audiobooks in 2012 by Big Finish Productions. It was the first time Baker had reprised his iconic role since stepping down as the longest-serving Time Lord in 1981.

The first instalment will be heard in a fortnight on 16th May, and sees the Doctor and Leela (played by Tenko’s Louise Jameson) respond to an alien distress call beamed from Victorian England. Their adventure takes them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva, where they discover the human race is in grave danger.
Nerva first appeared in the 1975 television episode Ark In Space, which inspired Nicholas Briggs, the writer and director of this episode.
In subsequent episodes the Tardis will go to a museum of everything, back to Roman times to meet Celtic queen Boudicca, and to a futuristic London in the midst of energy crisis. Listeners are also promised “a showdown with some old enemies”.
Doctor Who: Destination Nevra will be broadcast on Saturday 16th May at 6pm on Radio 4 Extra

The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who

The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who

Synopsis

Doctor Who stories are many things: thrilling adventures, historical dramas, tales of love and war and jelly babies. They’re also science fiction – but how much of the science is actually real, and how much is really fiction?

With commentary that explores the possibilities of time travel, life on other planets, artificial intelligence, parallel universes and more, Simon Guerrier and Dr Marek Kukula show how Doctor Who uses science to inform its unique style of storytelling – and just how close it has often come to predicting future scientific discoveries.

This book is your chance to be the Doctor’s companion and explore what’s out there. It will make you laugh, and think, and see the world around you differently.

Because anything could be out there. And going out there is the only way to learn what it is.
