The Most Important Show On Wikipedia?

The Most Important Show On Wikipedia?

What is the most important television show on Wikipedia?

Thanks to Wikipedia, we have never been better informed about pointless subjects. We have all spent countless hours trawling for the most obscure article we can find. But what about the other end of the scale? What are the most used, most linked to, most important articles on Wikipedia?
A new tool you to look for the most important articles using any tag on the site. We’re a television site, so let’s look up the most powerful TV wiki in the world:Congratulations to the Simpsons, which pips Doctor Who to the top spot. There are some surprises there: who knew that Lost and Saturday Night Live were still so important? What about the most important films?Congratulations to The Simpsons, which pips The Wizard of Oz to the top…wait, what? Sure The Simpsons had a film, but is it really more significant than The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Schindler’s list and Doctor Who? Wait…Doctor Who?
Even the fans don’t like the Doctor Who films! What’s going on?
Well, the tool pulls information about the articles from Wikidata. By default, it then ranks them according to ‘Harmonic Centrality’. This is a fairly complex method that measures how many pages link to an article, and how many pages link to those pages and so on. It can produce some odd results. Not only do the makers admit that because Wikipedia’s tagging relies on people it’s not always correct or complete, it doesn’t tend to give you the most… useful articles on a subject.
For instance, who is the most important actor on Wikipedia? That’s right! President Ronald Reagan! Followed by the Bard, Dylan and MJ. Not forgetting Madonna or Spielberg. All of these people may have acted at one point or another, but you wouldn’t call them primarily actors.
Similarly, the presence of Saturday Night Live and two war documentaries on the television show rankings can probably be put down to the number of people who have starred or appeared in SNL (and thus link back to that page) and the fact that the World Wars are among the most trafficked articles in all of Wikipedia.

Series 9 Casting News

Series 9 Casting News

David Schofield has been signed up to appear in the next series of Doctor Who.

Schofield is best known for playing King Alined in the BBC fantasy drama series Merlin. Other TV appearances include roles inFootballers’ Wives, Holby City, Jekyll & Hyde and, most recently, as Police Sergeant Foley in Hugo Blick’s The Shadow Line for BBC Two. Big Screen appearances include roles in An American Werewolf In London, The Last of the Mohicans, Anna Karenina and Gladiator as well as playing as Mr. Mercer in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Doctor Who Magazine reveals that Schofield will appear in episodes five and six of the new series, currently being filmed in Cardiff.

As reported last month, the episodes also feature Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams as well as comic Rufus Hound. The BBC have released a video of Hound at the script read through.

Showrunner Steven Moffat hinted to DWM that the role played by Williams is particularly significant saying she would “challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways”.

Doctor Who series 9: Rufus Hound's character is called...

The comedian Rufus Hound reveals who he is playing a behind the scenes video from the read-through for The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived, starring Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams

It’s fair to say that Rufus House is rather excited to appear in series 9 of Doctor Who – “completely bloody chuffed to bits,” in fact.
The comedian features in the latest behind-the-scenes video from two-parter The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived, both starring Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams. The clip gives a glimpse of the read-through for the episodes, with Hound himself announcing that he’s playing a character called Sam Swift, which doesn’t mean an awful lot, really. Maybe he can run really fast? Speaking of acting alongside Peter Capaldi and Williams, Hound said that, “I had to make sure I played it cool, because inside I was not. I’m trying to be a professional, rather than a boy wanting to run around squeeing!”

RUSSELL T DAVIES TALKS SEX & DRUGS & ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

The man who brought Doctor Who back to TV in 2005 returns with an audio adaptation of his very first Doctor Who adventure, the 1996 novel Damaged Goods! Russell tells DWM how the story influenced his reinvention of the TV series…

“It kind of shows the promise that I didn’t know was there with Doctor Who,” Russell says of his two-decade-old novel. “Because Doctor Who – the ‘classic’ Doctor Who that I grew up loving – didn’t, famously, blow up the world. Invasions and monsters would tend to limit themselves to the gardens of UNIT, or a country house. It’s interesting, that sequence in Damaged Goods with the train blowing up, which then led to me destroying the entire city – that kind of liberated me, and then I carried that into Doctor Who. So I was thinking ‘Right, you can have a spaceship crash into Big Ben, you can do anything you like…’”

THE BEST DOCTOR WHO WAS PATRICK TROUGHTON” SAYS DAVID TENNANT’S FATHER-IN-LAW PETER DAVISON – (WHO WAS ALSO THE FIFTH DOCTOR)

THE BEST DOCTOR WHO WAS PATRICK TROUGHTON” SAYS DAVID TENNANT’S FATHER-IN-LAW PETER DAVISON – (WHO WAS ALSO THE FIFTH DOCTOR)

From left to right: Patrick Troughton, Peter Davison and David Tennant

Peter Davison, who played the fifth Time Lord, is about to visit Cardiff as part of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular.

Former Doctor Who actor Peter Davison has revealed that his all-time favourite Time Lord is Patrick Troughton – despite the fact that his son-in-law David Tennant famously played the role. And he says that all the subsequent Doctors, like himself, have Troughton to thank for paving the way for them as he was the first actor to be regenerated after taking over from the original, William Hartnell.

“I watched both William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton but I think he had the hardest job,” Davison says of the latter. “If Patrick hadn’t done his job as well as he did, we wouldn’t be where we are now. For with him they decided to invent the idea of regeneration. Before his first episode I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to hate this’ but he won me over. “He brought so much that was new to it, a vulnerability. He had the hardest job but did it so well and, of course, we owe him an enormous debt,” admits Davison, who himself wouldn’t have become the fifth Doctor (from 1982 to 1984) if the whole regeneration idea hadn’t worked. But after sharing his awe of Troughton, the actor is clearly keen to keep the peace at home by adding with a laugh: “I think I might also have to mention the 10th Doctor.” The 10th Doctor was, of course, David Tennant – the man adored by latter day fans of the BBC Wales-produced sci-fi series, who went on to marry Davison’s daughter Georgia Moffett (Moffett is Davison’s real name). Davison and Scottish star Tennant shared scenes together before they became in-laws in Time Crash, the Children In Need Doctor Who special which aired in November 2007. “I was thrilled to do it,” says Davison.

“It was a great script by Steven Moffat and I felt it very much connected the classic series with the modern series.” A few months later, Georgia was filming her own scenes opposite her future husband when she played the Doctor’s artificially-created daughter Jenny. Now the famously publicity-shy couple – no posed red carpet shots of the pair exist and they avoid talking about their relationship during interviews – have a young daughter, Olive, and son, Wilfred, and Tennant has adopted her son, Ty, whom she gave birth to as a teenager.

From left to right: Richard Hurndall, Peter Davison, Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton from “The Five Doctors” (1983)

But Davison speaks with warmth when he mentions his son-in-law and reveals that Tennant knows “everything” when it comes to Doctor Who.

“I’ve watched nearly every episode and would call myself a fan,” says Davison when quizzed about his own knowledge of all things Time Lord-related.

“But I couldn’t look at a photo and say, ‘That’s from such an episode and it’s taken 10 minutes into it.’”

Unlike current Doctor Peter Capaldi, no doubt, who is a self-confessed superfan.

Does Davison rate him in the role?

“I think he’s great. He has a different take on it. I interviewed him for BBC America last year and he was very interesting.”

Despite more than 30 years passing since Davison took control of the TARDIS, he is still very much a part of the whole franchise and he’s now he’s gearing himself up to host an arena tour of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, which will celebrate the long-running series through its thrilling music written by Murray Gold.

The tour, which will include two Cardiff Motorpoint Arena performances, features more than 100 performers including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and members of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, conducted by Ben Foster.

The show, which has already toured Australia and New Zealand, features a host of the Doctor’s famous adversaries including the iconic Daleks and Cybermen and live monsters.

The live music will be accompanied by a big screen presentation of key moments from Doctor Who in specially edited video sequences.

“Doctor Who fans are an extraordinary, wonderful bunch, who are very passionate about the series,” adds Davison.

“The Symphonic Spectacular has already proved to be a monster hit down under with thousands of fans packing into arenas across the southern hemisphere and the UK’s first ever tour promises to be even bigger.”

Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on May 25 at 3pm and 7.30pm. For tickets, call 029 2022 4488 or visit www.livenation.co.uk/cardiff
