Doctor Who Adventures moves to Panini

The Gallifreyan Newsroom today received confirmation that Panini UK, already publishers of Doctor Who Magazine, take over the publication of Doctor Who Adventures from Immediate Media later next month, we have a treat for you – a first look at the first new strip for the comic, written by Jason Quinn and drawn by Russ Leach, coloured by Marvel UK veteran John Burns.

“The pages are coming together well,” Russ says of his work on the new stories so far. “I’m about to start another issues pencils today. [Colourist] John Burns’ colours are lovely!

“I’m so grateful to be chosen by Jason to work on this gig,” he continues. “I’m a big fan of Doctor Who (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker being the Doctors of my youth, and I’m loving Peter Capaldi) and I hope my take on the characters pleases the readers!

“I’m also very keen on being involved in comics for Doctor Who Adventures demographic – I grew up with comics and love the idea of being involved in producing strips for the 8-15 market.”

“I’ve mostly used a more adult style for the books I’ve been involved with so far,” he says of his art, “so I’ve had to adapt and create a style that is lighter but at the same time not watering down the character too far – Jason is pleased with where we have it and so am I!”

Doctor Who reveals Maisie Williams as guest star in series 9
Having landed back in the UK fresh from touring the US, today Maisie Williams sets foot on the Doctor Who TARDIS to take up a guest role in the hit BBC One show that returns to our screens this autumn.

Maisie has already found global fame and is renowned for her role as Arya Stark in the international fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. She also starred in the one-off docu-drama Cyberbully and was cast as one of the leads of Carol Morley’s drama The Falling. As well as being a three-time Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee, in February of this year she was awarded with a Shooting Star Award at the Berlin Film Festival.

On her first day on set, Maisie Williams said: “I’m so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it’s such a big and important part of British Culture. I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, added: “We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

Doctor Who: Doom Coalition (Coming Soon)

Doctor Who: Doom Coalition (Coming Soon)

The Eighth Doctor’s next adventure is unveiled; the Doom Coalition is coming!

“I couldn’t help noticing. Just then… Another personality emerged. Was that Seven? Ten?”

In October 2015 the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and his companion Liv Chenka (Nicola Walker) will head into a brand new era of Doctor Who, as the TARDIS is recalled to Gallifrey by the Time Lords. And they will be battling a new foe known only as The Eleven…

Doctor Who: Doom Coalition is an epic saga that will span four box sets (a total of sixteen episodes) forming one breathtaking inter-connecting saga that will push the Doctor’s bravery and resourcefulness to its limits.

“The overall story of Doom Coalition was devised by myself and Ken Bentley over the course of many walks to the studio,” says producer David Richardson, “Our framework has been fleshed out by a fantastic team of writers, and realised by a brilliant cast – and I can’t wait for the roller-coaster to begin in October!”

“Doom Coalition is unlike anything we’ve attempted before,” says director Ken Bentley. “It’s on a scale that we hope will satisfy loyal listeners. It’s also a new, completely stand-alone adventure, making it a great place to start if you’re listening to Doctor Who on audio for the very first time.”

The first box set will see a new addition to the TARDIS team when gifted philologist Helen Sinclair steps aboard in the second episode.

“Helen is from 1963,” explains David. “She was, in part, inspired by Doctor Who’s first producer Verity Lambert – she’s a driven, career-minded woman in a male-dominated profession. And she’s a head-strong and capable companion in the mould of Barbara Wright, Sarah Jane Smith and Tegan Jovanka.”

Helen is played by Hattie Morahan, whose many leading credits include Bodies, Eternal Law, The Bletchley Circle and the upcoming film Mr Holmes.

“Hattie had been on our radar for some time and we’d been waiting for the right role to come along. When we were recording Dark Eyes 4 Hattie’s name came up during conversation and Paul got very enthusiastic, telling us how much he’d like to work with her. The pieces just fell into place. It was the most effortless casting ever!”

Doom Coalition’s first episode also introduces a brand new villain – albeit one that the Doctor has been batting throughout his lives… The Eleven is a Time Lord who retains each one of his personalities every time he regenerates; now in his Eleventh incarnation, he is an insane sociopath. Captured by the Seventh Doctor and placed in confinement on Gallifrey, the Eleven has been contained for many years. But now he has escaped…

The Eleven is played by Mark Bonnar, who was recently seen in Channel 4’s

Catastrophe, and won critical acclaim in The Line of Duty. His other leading credits include Shetland, Psychoville and Paradox.

The first volume’s stellar cast also includes Robert Bathurst (Downton Abbey, Toast of London, Blandings), Caroline Langrishe (Dominick Hide, Lovejoy, Judge John Deed), Ramon Tikaram (Stella, Jupiter Ascending, Game of Thrones), David Yelland (Chariots of Fire, Poirot), John Woodvine (Doctor Who: The Armageddon Factor), Harry Myers (Bernice Summerfield), Esther Hall (Queer as Folk, Spooks, Rome) and Matthew Cottle (Game On, Citizen Khan).

Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 1 is released in October 2015. The remaining three volumes will follow across 2016 and into 2017 and can be bought as a collected Bundle.

The last adventure for the Eighth Doctor was the Doctor Who – Dark Eyes saga. Dark Eyes 4 was released in March, and from 1st April goes to a full-release price of £40 on CD and £35 on Download. However, the full Dark Eyes bundle will stay at £80 for all four series!

Big Finish Licence Extended until 2020

Big Finish Licence Extended until 2020

As revealed in this month’s Doctor Who Magazine, the titles and some further details for series five of Fourth Doctor Adventures have been announced…

The Fourth Doctor, Romana and K9 return in 2016 for a full season of Doctor Who audio adventures from Big Finish. The eight releases will see the return of some old foes and friends, and include a stellar line-up of guest stars.

The Wave of Destruction by Justin Richards kicks off the run, as the travellers become involved with strange occurrences on a pirate radio station in the 1960s. Karl Theobald (Primeval, Twenty Twelve) plays disc jockey Mark Lanchaster.

In February’s The Labyrinth of Buda Castle by Eddie Robson, the Doctor and Romana decide to holiday in another exotic European city, but find that death is stalking the local population. Kate Bracken (Misfits, Being Human) guest stars as supernatural investigator Celia Soames.

March’s The Paradox Planet and April’s The Legacy of Death, both by Jonathan Morris, take us to the world of Aoris, where two different time zones have declared war on each other. And the Doctor and Romana are trapped on different sides… Simon Rouse (Doctor Who: Kinda) plays Drang, Tom Chadbon (Doctor Who: The City of Death, Del Grant in Blake’s 7) plays scientist Embery while Emma Campbell-Jones (Doctor Who: The Wedding of River Song and The Night of the Doctor) is his assistant Shola.

‘How brilliant to have Tom Chadbon back with his City of Death cast mates!’ says producer David Richardson. ‘And while it wasn’t a return for the detective Duggan, it was still a joy to watch them sitting together on the sofa, fondly reminiscing about their times filming in Paris back in 1979.’

The Gallery of Ghouls by Alan Barnes, released in May, finds the Doctor and Romana investigating a waxworks exhibition in Brighton in 1833. Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Doctor Who: The Bells of St John) plays Madame Tissot, while Nickolas Grace (Robin of Sherwood, Brideshead Revisited) is the waxworks manager Goole.

The cockney Time Lord Drax, whose only TV appearance was The Armageddon Factor in 1979, makes his comeback in June’s The Trouble With Drax by John Dorney. Ray Brooks (Big Deal, Mr Benn, Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 AD) takes on the role originally portrayed by Barry Jackson, while the cast also includes John Challis (Doctor Who: The Seeds of Doom, Only Fools and Horses, The Green Green Grass, and recently interviewed for the free Big Finish podcast Toby Hadoke’s Who’s Round #111) and Hugh Fraser (Agatha Christie’s Poirot).

‘We devised The Trouble With Drax for Barry,’ says producer David Richardson, ‘but sadly he passed away before the script was even completed. We searched hard for an actor to continue his legacy, and Ray Brooks was the ideal choice – so charming, so naughty… I think people will love the new incarnation of Drax when they hear him.’

The season ends on an epic story spread over two releases – The Pursuit of History in July, and Casualties of Time in August, both by Nicholas Briggs. David Warner makes his comeback as the mysterious Cuthbert, and his former assistant Mr Dorrick (Toby Hadoke) is back too. Both characters appeared in four releases during the second season of The Fourth Doctor Adventures.

‘I’d always intended to continue the story of Cuthbert and Dorrick and the mysterious Conglomerate,’ says Nick, ‘but when we lost dear Mary Tamm all plans for that storyline were put aside. However, with Lalla signing up to these stories I decided to return to some of my original ideas, melded them with some new thoughts, and the result is the huge season finale. It’s quite a ride!’

The guest cast also includes David Troughton (Doctor Who: Midnight and The Curse of Peladon) as the Black Guardian.

‘Could it be that the past is finally catching up with the Doctor and Romana?’ teases Nick…

The fifth series of Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures can be Subscribed to today on CD or Download at a price that saves considerably on buying the stories individually. The next story in this range is Doctor Who – Death Match which comes out later in the month.

Doctor Who: The Cloisters of Terror (Trailer)

The trailer for June’s Fourth Doctor and Leela adventure – Doctor Who – The Cloisters of Terror – is now online…

In June we release Jonathan Morris’ story Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Cloisters of Terror. To give a chill flavour of this tale, the trailer is now online and can be listened to via the link above.

St Matilda’s College, Oxford is haunted. The building was formerly a convent and, so the story goes, three ghostly nuns wander its passages during the hours of darkness. The story goes on to say that anyone who sees the ‘three sisters’ will not be long for this world.

When one of the students mysteriously disappears, the Dean of the College, Dame Emily Shaw, has no option but to call in the police. Her call appears to be answered when a Police Box arrives in her study; the Doctor and Leela have come to investigate and uncover the dark secret that has lain buried beneath the college for almost a thousand years…

Joining Tom Baker and Louise Jameson as the Fourth Doctor and Leela is Rowena Cooper as Emily Shaw, mother of the Third Doctor’s much loved companion Liz Shaw.

Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Cloisters of Terror will be released in June, with more news available soon.

It’s still possible to Subscribe to the entire fourth series of Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures. The next story to be released is April’s Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures – Death Match.
